PC vs Mac

just go into the store and try it out for a bit and make youre own opinions on what you like or not the thing is our opnions may not be like yours so best thing to do is to go in to a store and try one out and c for youre self wether or not you like it i know u wont get so much covered in and hour or so but still.

Yes i decided to do that. In this thread I see people telling me the Macbook Pro doensnt last longer than a PC laptop, on other forums I see people who say it does. The same thing for many other aspects. So I just go to the store, see wether I like it, and maybe ill buy it.

Cool c if u can find an Apple store they have all kinds of stuff set up so you Can play around with it just dont buy it there most places are cheaper than the Apple store pricing

Im from the Netherlands and the prices are the same everywhere for macbooks. So I think ill be going to the app store soon.

I use a macbook air in my private life and working life. I work a lot with cad drawings in my field of work. And I enjoy working on it, And i find that the cad program I'm working on is way easier to use than using the same program on a windows operating system. One thing that helps a lot is that i am able to use gestures. I usually draw parts 4 engines and feed them into a cnc cutter or other types of machinery besides this i work a lot with pictures and movies. But only as a hobby thing you know with holiday pictures or movies. Now i used to be a big windows man... And as a gamer most people usually have a big argument every time you discuss this. My opinion about this is that people should try it before you criticize it. And thats why i decided to buy one and try it out myself. And let me say i do not regret my purchase. So wether or not you buy one that is up to you. Just be prepared people will argue with you almost every time you take you're laptop out of the bag. I hope this helped a bit

Remember most people thats calling everything apple makes crap, docent know what they are talking about since all they've done is look at the specs on the back of the box and look at the price tag. Most of the things that makes a mac great is the software and user friendliness not hardware.

This is my favorite response, because I agree 100%.

A lot of the creative people tend to use Mac because they were grandfathered into it pretty early. A lot of art labs at Universities are filled with Macs, etc. Also, they are a lot more elegant which could appeal to a person which holds that type of predisposition.

In addition, there is some software Apple makes that could be considered industry standard, such as Final Cut.

Well as far as a laptop goes for an on the go person a mac has quite good battery life so that is always a plus and the sleek look is a plus as well. I can only speak for video editing with final cut pro, and it was very easy but I love sony vegas much more. I'd say make a hackin tosh and then decide if you want to spend a large amount of money on an apple laptop

Alright so basicly if i summarize all the reply's, a MacBook has no actually advantages over a windows 8 regarding to creative people use adobe software. The only difference is mostly beter quality.

This laptop reliability survey may interest you. The results are honestly not very surprising.

http://www.squaretrade.com/htm/pdf/SquareTrade_laptop_reliability_1109.pdf

I'm sorry but that survey is ridiculous. There is no "X out of X laptops failed" which is what the whole point should be. It only says how many laptops failed for each brand. Notice how the worse scorers are also the top sellers? That's obviously because they have product out there.

Which brings me back to the original point of Mac vs PC. Remember those "I'm a Mac, I'm a PC" commercials? You know why you don't see them anymore? It's because most of the things that Apple claimed were ONLY because they had a FAR lower percent of the market share.

90%(PC) vs 10%(Mac)

More viruses? Of course you're going to see more viruses! Who wants to make a virus for 10% of the market when you can spend less time making it for 90% of the market?

More crashing? Of course you're going to see more crashes! There's NINE times the amount of systems out there! Believe me, the two Mac users I support at work have quite a few problems with their MacBook Pros.

As far as a Mac being more reliable than a PC, on a hardware or software level, I would say absolutely not in either case. Once again, you're paying for a cool looking status symbol.

Exactly... that survey is only the people that participated in the SquareTrade warranty program, which is not everyone.

"We next turn our attention to the relative reliability of different laptop manufacturers. Our study data
includes 9 brands with a minimum of 1000 units"

You see there's no maximum, only a minimum. You don't think that the higher the numbers, means that there's more of that brand out there? Even if you wanted use SquareTrade as an average for the actual market(which it's not) I bet a graph of sales figures for those brands would look very similar. Basically, HP is worst on the list because they sold the most in that period of time.

And 1/3 of their own numbers were from customer damage(aka not the vendors fault)...

And they can't even determine what truly classifies as a netbook or laptop, only which is cheaper or more expensive than $400...

And their "3 year" numbers are only a projection, not actual data...

No, not even that.

I would say that Apple spends more money in design and making the laptop look "cooler" and that's how they justify the big price difference.

They're using percentages. I'm pretty sure all calculations are proportional.

Ok then, here's an example. Lets say HP has 30% of the market share and Asus only has 10%. Hypothetically, lets say they both have the same failure rates, 50%. What is going to be a larger percentage, 50% of 30% or 50% of 10%? Obviously HP is going to look worse because 15% of the laptops out there are failed HPs, versus 5% for failed Asus'.

Bottom line, the only accurate way would be to take 1000 of each manufacturer and see how many of those 1000 have a problem. But then take into consideration the failed part. Where I work, I support 400 design engineers who use Lenovo, Dell and Toshiba laptops. 95% of the failed hardware tickets I get are hard drives, which aren't even made by the laptop manufacturer. In my experience and taking into account how many of each laptop are in the environment, I would say they all are about the same, in terms of say, a failed motherboard. Now I am speaking from the business line of these manufacturers. Latitude not Inspiron, Portege not Satellite, etc. However, I am sure even the consumer line is fairly close in terms of hardware problems.

So the bottom, bottom line is like I mentioned before. Pick a laptop that has the specs you want and has good reviews.

Hey, I didn't see this thread until now but I have a macbook pro and so do many of my friends who do heavy graphic design stuff. If you have any questions or inquiries, feel free to PM me! I'll try to be the best of help I can be.

It's funny how people who have never really used anything but Windows and PC's love to complain about how overpriced, underpowered, etc a Mac is.

The fact is it is more expensive than a common PC. A Mercedes is also more expensive than a KIA. You can't really perform an apples to apples comparison between the two. Some people are satisfied with the KIA and others want the luxury of the Mercedes..
First off, I have used both macs and pcs.

Secondly, your comparison is wrong. Of course comparing a mercedes to a kia the mercedes is going to win because it costs more. The only FAIR comparison is to compare two equivalently priced computers, one that is a mac and one that is pc. The pc will always have more powerful parts because less money is spent on the looks and the design and also Apple overprices their products because of their reputation.

Agreed, though your laptop will have a higher resale value... that is if anyone will even buy it.

Here is a macbook:

Specs are quite bad, honestly mac has nothing on pcs other than their look.

And then here would be a few laptops near the same price:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152408

And then an ultrabook http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834230669

Assuming you will be doing editing etc rendering will be much faster on an i7 than the outdated i5 that the macbook offers. You would also have the option of playing games on your laptop if you went the pc route, with the macbook you would struggle with games that are a few years old due to the lack of a dedicated card.

If you have an Apple laptop, you can say that you have an apple product. If you get a pc, you get a solid rig. Also as far as quality both apple and brands such as ASUS have just about the same quality as far as parts go.

I came to the conclusion I will stick to windows for a while. Because if I upgrade my Pc even further more (talking about my desktop pc now), it will be awesome. I must say macbook look cool, but I dont gain much advantages from buying one. Thanks for the comment everyone.

Make a new thread so we can help pick out some parts :)
