I found TF2 through school. Not joking either.
Back in my Junior year of High School, I had to take two classes for May (2009) term: Speech and an elective. I was enrolled at a Collegiate High School (community college + high school), so there was such a thing as May term. There were several choices for electives, but I picked Gaming. The class was a very brief intro to the design and development of video games, but specifically of FPS games. Although I had not played many FPS games before then, my interest was piqued.
Each student was given a Steam account the school owned (for use during the semester). I was able to try out Counter-Strike, Half-Life 2, Left 4 Dead, and the beloved Team Fortress 2. May term was short, but I was still able to login to the account from home over the summer, so I would play TF2 on my poor old laptop that could barely run the game. Eventually, the login credentials were invalid , and I was no longer able to access the games.
Christmas that year, my best friend Meep received the Orange Box as a gift. I convinced her to let me play on her account every now and then when I was over at her house. So my love for Team Fortress 2 continued, despite no longer having the school account to play on.
The following May term, I took the Gaming course again. To my distraught, Steam accounts were no longer provided. Sure, Unreal Tournament was fun, but I wanted my flamethrower and flare gun! Thus, when summer arrived, I bought the game while it was on sale. (Mercenary badge says Sunday, June 13, 2010 is my hire date.) That summer, I was happily playing Pyro on 2fort. Despite my lagtastic laptop, I played TF2 as often as I could in many 2fort servers. (That was the Summer of 2fort for me.) One of the servers happened to be eGO's 2fort server. A member tried to recruit me then, but since it was the summer before my first year in university, I thought it'd be a bad idea to join.
That Christmas, I was given a new laptop after my older one faltered and died. While not a gaming computer, this laptop ran TF2 much better than the last. So goodbye, to the horrible lag, and hello semi-decent gaming! The following summer of 2011, I branched out and played on different maps and game modes. (There was more to TF2 than just 2fort!) By the end of summer, I found a home: eGO's 24/7 Valve Maps server. Aside from having amazing ping on the server, I didn't have to worry about being harassed in game for using my microphone, and I became friends with the regulars. It was great. I was eventually recruited, and the rest is history.
( This was probably unnecessarily extremely long, but oh well. :3 )

There were the few who could kill everyone, such as Frikfry but anyway, you guys don't care about that. About a week before the CoD division was disbanded I was promoted to eGO. Sadly, I didn't get to play much with my friends after that. I forgot to mention, about 3 months ago my brother got TF2 and he was loving it. He'd spend everyday telling me to download it. Once the CoD division was ended, I came over here and began that long hard process of learning to play
