Source Stutter

Well, you're not dropping packets. 100% packet loss on a blank line is just a switch with paranoid security on it. However, looking at the max ping and the graph across the bottom it looks like you're spiking a pretty high ping with a fairly regular pattern. Lets see if we can't narrow it down. First, some information if you please.

1. Please confirm that these ping spikes correspond to the stutter you are experiencing in game. (net_graph 1 in console and watch the traffic when you stutter)
2. Is there anything else in the room, particularly between the wireless router and your system that can be generating interference?
3. Are you running anything on your computer that could be creating this in the background?

Given that you're running a wireless network (and I have a particular loathing for the inconsistency of wireless) I'm thinking this may be either interference or simply a bad router. So, assuming that #1 proves true and your ping is spiking at the same time you are stuttering, I want you to go invest in some CAT-5 Network Cable so we can confirm if this is entirely on your end or not. Cabling is cheap and you can never have too much of it. Disable your wireless network card, unhook the wireless router, and plug your box directly into the modem your ISP provided. If the stutter is gone, then it's your wireless. If it's not, then we'll have to see what else is going on.

1. Yes, these ping spikes do correspond to the stutter.
2. I wouldn't know; My PC is upstairs, and my router is downstairs. What are somethings that could interfere? Phones?
3. No, I'm not, that would be one of the first things i checked.

I already have some CAT-5 Network cable, and I'll give it a try when i get home.

One of the reasons I loath wireless routers/keyboards/mice is that pretty much anything with an electric current running through it can generate interference. If the stutter doesn't happen while plugged in, then you can safely assume it was probably your wireless network. But at that point I can't help you much, short of suggesting you go wired on a gaming machine where ping spikes matter.

Lafn i would say i had almost this same exact problem around the update, several config changes i had made, and my player list not showing up all going on at the same time i did 2 things to fix my problem

went to my steam dir deleted all but steam.exe and steamapps dir, went to tf/cfg erased config.cfg
i use autoexec so that only wipes fps and system commands that are stuck in there

now you will probably need to rebind a few things after all of this but i can say that immeadiatly after that all my problems stoped gameplay is back to normal

My problem was resolved, it was a router in Houston dropping an unacceptable percentage of packets.

Existence is suffering from a different issue.

Unfortunately, the way the Source engine is coded network packet loss, ping spikes, CPU lag, memory issues, hard drive issues, and graphical lag can all present as a brief stutter in gameplay. I have never in all my years seen a game react so uniformly to all kinds of disturbance in the flow of things.

I now know that the sttuter also happens on Vent. If someone is talking, they pause for a sec, mid-word, then continue.
This is very annoying.

Well at least that means we're not dealing with a source specific bug, have you tried bypassing your wireless yet?

some things i would like to point out

with ping plotter watch the bottom hop only
most core networks will block icmp traffic along the path and seing pl along the path is not as affecting as seeing it at the destination

i will tell you as i have told more than i can think lately

my autoexec didnt do this i had to manually adjust my rate to 30000 and cl_updaterate 101 cmdrate in an internal value and should be fine at its default 66 though mine is 101

all other net settings i leave at default values but i did have to reset these after the patch to clear a "studdering" issue i saw my fps droping into >20's and the second i changed my rate it poped to 60-100

this is with all vis options at 1600x1200 or 1450x1200 i got a 22" mon max settings single 8800gtx

Not to be rude, but that's idiotic. The entire point of using PingPlotter or a similar program is to determine where in the path a problem is occurring. It allows one to determined if the problem is server side, client side, or somewhere inbetween.

And it's rare if I see more than 1 or 2 nodes blocking ICMP in a path of 20.

Dont want to intterupt your squabble, but i believe my problem is every 5 minutes my wireless WG311v2 card is stuttering. Meaning this is happening with my whole connection, not just source games.

If I were to buy another wireless card (less than 30$, wireless G), what would you reccomend? And going wired isnt an option.

Haven't the foggiest mate, I've never setup or maintained a wireless network.
