A Growing Trend on TF2 Servers

Somehow I missed this thread when it was alive, so forgive me for bringing it back, but I wanted to say something about this.

I was professionally diagnosed with Asperger's about 5 years ago now, and had a really hard time with the news. It's only within the last couple of years that I've grown to accept it and feel comfortable with myself. I thankfully haven't come across anyone using it on our servers in a disparaging way, but if I did, it would probably make me uncomfortable. Like everyone else is saying, yeah, it's an incredible ignorant attempt at being insulting, but even the fact that someone wants to use my disability (I don't really like that word, but whatever) in an attempt to be hurtful is discouraging.

Of course, this is me I'm talking about, so I would get over the discouragement very quickly and shoot back some scathing remark that would shame them into silence faster than Idol could ban them. :biggrin:
 
Thank you, Kelp, for bumping this, because I really want to give input on this.

I, myself, have Asperger's. It is indeed on the autism spectrum. Seeing that it kind of stops me from being the helpful, warm person I want to be, it's severely inhibiting and it SUCKS. But, without it, I would not be as interested as I would in TF2 or video games as a whole.

It's a blessing and a curse, but I don't want this to be a thing. I personally haven't seen this from any eGO members, but if Insomnia is talking about it, it's a big deal. It means a lot to me that she would bring it up, and I hope many take heed to her words. Autism is not an insult.

One thing I want to be clear on: Do we have a set procedure for whenever this happens? I seem to remember from AT that it's w/k/b but from the tone of this thread I feel it needs something more.

Personally, I'd W/K/B but I'd be very specific about it, i.e. Warning specifically about using autism as an insult. If they decide to persist, they can meet my hammer.

Fair enough. I also suggest banning their family, just to be sure. Never know when their long lost son will grow up to be an orphan farmboy and seek revenge for his father's untimely ban.
 
ive heard it said before and Ill be sure to admin against it w/k/b. We have players and members from all walks of life here and I wont tolerate anyone eGO, ex eGO or non eGO making anyone feel of a lesser status.
 
It took me a while before I noticed this was a necro.

What people lack when they make these jokes is perspective. It's the thing that surrounds the basis of Ebola jokes, racist jokes, religious jokes... pretty much any offensive joke out there.

I can say that because I do have perspective. I don't have Asberger's myself, but my brother has a mild form of it, and he will get aggressively offended if you introduce "the r-word" (retarded) in whatever you're saying. In that sense, I myself have learned to get offended at that same thing too, so I can relate a small bit to this kind of thing.

Thankfully, I haven't seen mental slowness or autism being used too much as a joke anymore, and anyone who uses those jokes on our servers usually gets banned anyways. So I doubt bumping this thread will do much except let others add with their own experiences (see: me).
 
I've seen it be used in pretty much every Valve game out there, as well as on twitch. Wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't in -every- multiplayer game.

I have AS as well, among other 'unique traits/characteristics'. Sometimes I wish I didn't and wish I was just normal, other times it's..interesting?

Another thing people don't realize is what other people go through. Not everyone has a perfect life. Not everyone didn't get bullied or pushed around.

I could go on. But the last thing that someone who did get bullied or pushed around needs is to be insulted where they enjoy being - in a game (in a matter of speaking). Just adding insult to injury.

IMO, it helps though. Simply put - People need to realize that it's not ok and that there's a bigger picture.

Bumping is fine in this case. He wanted to add personal perspective. I'm actually open with talking about this kind of thing openly and regularly.

If you see it on the servers, practice w/k/b but as said above, it really helps if you state very specifically why. You can also privately warn the player and explain that we don't support "isms" here, including poking fun at medical conditions or disabilities. Sometimes people just don't realize how it can be hurtful and they're not trying to be insensitive.

Admins, use your best judgment in a situation. This is why we trust you to be admins. But if you ever have questions or want a second opinion, feel free to ask myself, any of leadership, the ATs, or other admins for advice. We're a team here. Working together, we build a better, stronger community.

I feel like this should be stickied somewhere like eG private, this is important and sadly neglected sometimes.
