Just a couple of weeks ago, i could import my own spray, 256x256: saved as TGA, everytime when I click the spray then import, my game would crash to the desktop.

make sure its in vtf format, not tga? i dont know why your game would crash though

also make sure u put the spray in the right folder and make sure you have both vtf files

Another thing to try (which worked for me) is to import the spray into another Steam game (like CSS) and physically copy the files from the other app's materials\vgui\logos folder to the tf folder structure. Once in that folder, TF2 will recognize the spray.

Valve has still not fixed this yet, theres a bug somewhere that causes that.

I've been making sprays for other members and been telling them to do what Groo said, you must use another source game to convert them. Theres a program out there that does it as well (forgot what it was) that will convert your pic or Targa file to .vtm and .vtf, can some1 care to tell me i always forget.

i googled it a while ago to find a program to convert picture files into vtf format for sprays, i use it and it works perfect

its called VTFEdit and you can download it here:

http://nemesis.thewavelength.net/index.php?c=178

make sure to make a folder for the picture u want to be converted, and make another folder for the vtf to be made in

then when u run vtfedit click tools --> convert folder, and browse for the imput and output folder, then put the name of the picture you want converted in the "to vtf" box and click convert

actually i think im going to make a tutorial on this soon :D
