I used to have a problem with nvtray.exe. Basically, whenever I started up the computer, t would start taking up a ton of memory and I would be forced to close it. It kept coming back after a while though, and eventually, I just put it in the recycle bin. However, I was afraid of possibly ruining my ability to game since it's related to Nvidia, so I figured there might be a problem with that. What causes nvtray.exe to start using up huge amounts of memory?

That's actually just the Nvidia system tray icon. You can disable it with no problems other than you having to look for your Nvidia control center everytime you want to change something. (not a big dead) To disable it, open your Nvidia control panel and look for something along the lines of "disable tray icon."

Late post, but to remove it from the tray, right click the icon on the tray and hit 'exit'.
However, I've previously noticed when doing this that it tends to come back up on occasion, so you could try finding it in the Windows Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Services program and disabling it there. --- (Haven't tried this myself, but don't see why it wouldn't show up there or any harm coming from disabling it aside from what SevenOh mentioned)
