Hey guys, I may be a little over-confident here, but I think I'm guaranteed a leadership position for my senior year of high school in my marching band. I will not name my school or band for privacy/safety reasons, but we are one of the most prominent high school marching bands in my county, although the quality/respect the students have to authority have kind of deteriorated over the years, we have the best musicians in the county and have a legacy to uphold. Anyways, I currently have never held an officer position in band, though I tried and failed to last year - I think the main reason I did not receive it was because I did not connect with the other members enough, and I admit I would probably have not been ready for a leadership position. However, after last summer where I obtained a leadership volunteer job (I was in charge of other volunteers and on a higher trust level with the paid employees), as well as my recent promotion to eG and admining our eGO servers, I feel that these leadership experiences will help me be a better leader and I think I am ready for a leadership position. The position I desire most is Band Captain, which is one of the highest ranking positions in our band - I would put out newsletters, though "in the action," I would help keep the band organized in the stands at football games, and at music competition I would help in leading the band onto the field - it is the band captains who call the band into attention, not the drum majors. As a backup leadership position, I signed up for equipment manager for which the job details are pretty self-explanatory - I would help with all the equipment the band uses. However, this is a lower position and although it is just as helpful to the band, I really want to inspire others as a band captain and use my higher powers with that position to help others. This job is not just disciplining others - it is truly leadership, much like the eGO council and advisers and division leaders, etc. I am a bit worried about my getting Band Captain because I know two other people who are pretty much guaranteed to get Band Captain, so it's a competition between me and one other person who is more qualified than I as she has been in band leadership this past year (because our band has 3 band captains, though we may revert back to 2, in which case I'm screwed). In either case, I know for sure I will get equipment manager because I have warmed up to my band director and connected more with the other band members, though I'm not sure I will get band captain, although this is my main goal. For anyone who is curious, I play the Eb Alto Saxophone and modestly, I guess I'm okay, but people tell me I'm an amazing player, although I'm not the best, I'm certainly not the worst. My weakest skill is sight reading :bored: Anyways I'm getting off topic here. I just thought I'd post this because of the connection to my eGO experiences in maintaining a positive attitude to set the example for the server and hold in any negative comments I might have to say.

I really can't think of how people can reply to this (as it's not really a discussion), but if you can think of one, I'd certainly like to hear it! :thumbup1:

I'm a Tenor 1 in my High School Choir, and I agree that sightreading (sightsinging ESPECIALLY do to solfege) can be very difficult - but it's not impossible. Rehearse every day. Find music in your director's library and play through it blind on a regular basis. You can do it! Then again, I managed to make it into the TMEA All-State Choir, so I may not be the best testament to sightreading's difficulty... ^_^ You just have to continue to practice, and know your intervals like the back of your hand. Good luck with the band captain endeavors, ZinDuo!

Some of the eGO leadership skills does help me.
You feel more confident talking to people and not afraid to lead.

Currently a JNCO (LCpl) in the RAF section of my school (in the UK) and probably am going to be the head of it next year which I'm looking forward to.

The experience that you get from eGO and the skills that you learn is amazing.

I had Leadership roles in my High school Marching Band (Drum Major etc.) and I also play E-flat Alto Sax.. Quite odd.

SAXOPHONES!!!!!! :thumbup::biggrin:

I am currently attending our Drum Major camp soley for the leadership learning experience. Honestly, I don't want to be a drum major because I love playing the music - I'm a true musician. I know that drum majors still make sacrifices for the band, but I'd rather still have that leadership but actually playing the music too.
