As some of you have heard from me, my family has fought in every war the United states has fought in all the way back to the revolutionary war. In the Revolutionary we fought as minute men for america. Civil war we went against eachother, Union was captured and taken to a POW camp where he escaped and reenlisted. WWI stuck in a trench like most soldiers, WWII Grandfather fought in the navy, Vietnam Mom's cousins dad. And current wars it's Mom and Dad's cousins fighting. My dad is a Former Marine.

I want to hear you're military experience/ history of your guy's family if you're okay sharing since it is Memorial weekend. And to our current and former members. Thank you for your service.

I am in the same boat as you, my friend. My father's side of the family came to America from Ireland about 20 years before the start of the Revolutionary War. They fought as minutemen in the North Carolinian Colony. During the Civil War, they fought a Confederates (I still hold true to my roots from this time to an extent). During WW1, they were stuck in the trenches. WW2, my Great Great Uncle was a Naval Aviator station at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. His plane was struck by a Japanese bomb as he was beginning to taxi to the end of the runway before takeoff. My Great Grandfather Served in the Korean War. Now going to Vietnam is where my Mother's side of the family begins to come into play.

My mother's side of the family moved over from Germany where they had to abandon their small village almost overnight because of the Nazi's pushing towards their homes. Both sides of my family was in in Vietnam. my Grandfather from my mother's side was in country, but did not have a brother, so was forced to stay back at base. My Grandfather on my father's side was a tanker in the thick of it. He doesn't like to talk about it that much.

Now we get to now. My father enlisted during Desert Storm and is still serving today. He is currently an E-8 (Master Sergeant) in the North Carolina National Guard and has about 24 years of service, with 15 being Active Duty. He has been deployed overseas twice. Once right after 9-11, and the second time in 2010.

I plan on following in his footsteps with joining the Army or Navy right after I finish college (Major in Aviation and Minor in Aeronautical Engineering) for career military. I am currently a freshman in High School in our Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps, and I hold the rank of Petty Officer Third Class (E-4).

This is my story.......

My father served for two years after the Vietnam war in the United States Air Force Military police. He was stationed in Greenland and protected nuclear sites. It was a pretty cool job, he said. He was honorably discharged after his contract at the rank of Senior Airman.

My grand father was from Slovakia, he served in the Slovak Cavalry (Yes, the horses) at an officer rank and after the service, he came to America. I don't know much about him, because he died before I was born.

One of my mom's brothers, my uncle, served in the United States Army. He went to a military school and graduated to start fighting in world war II. He worked his way up and decided to make a career out of it at the end of the war. He continued to serve in the Korean and Vietnam war to retire at the rank of Brigadier General. I talked with him a lot before he died in the Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Another one of my mom's brothers served in the United States Army in Vietnam as part of the medical corp. He was in charge of disease control for the soldiers and helped a lot of them with malaria and other mosquito born diseases.

One of my dad's brothers, also fought in Vietnam as part of the infantry division. He was awarded a purple heart after months of fighting and got an injury which impaired his ability to continue fighting. I have only visited him once, as he lives far away, but he still has some grenade shrapnel in his leg, and some other scars.

My last known relative that I can think of that fought in a war, was my French Great Great Great Great grandfather, named Felix Bernard Du'montier. He fought in the Revolutionary war in the French Navy. He helped the American revolutionaries in the battle of Yorktown.

I definitely respect all the men and women who have served/are serving as military personnel. And I thank you for your service to your country.

P.S. I like the thread, Storm. Interesting to read about other people's family military history.

Grandfather on my Mum's side was part of No.5 Group RAF as a tail gunner for the Lancaster Bombers during WW2, part of the first raiding party during the bombing of Dresden in 1945.

Grandfather on my Dad's side was part of the British 7th Armoured Division "The Desert Rats". Served in the North Africa campaign against the Italians.

Great uncle was part of the D-Day landings, can't remember what division, but was tasked with ferrying wounded and ammo between the front line and the beachhead after the initial landings. Shared a great story in which him and his squad ran into German troops picking up their wounded/dead in between the Allies front line and landings, ended up trading medical supplies seeing they were all tasked with the grim job of picking up pieces of their fallen comrades.

Other than that, no clue on WW1 history and no service from my family then on wards.
