Sanctified Aberration

My fellow players, I come to you under the gravest of circumstances. As many of you know, the changes to quickplay earlier in the year have harmed our servers and the community as a whole. Many of our servers are nigh impossible to fill, and empty all too quickly. I am not even going to bother talking about the painful day-to-day rankings as posted by the redoubtable Veelo. New recruits are getting harder to come by, and only die hard pubs and community members frequent our servers. We are not alone in this, either, other communities are hurting just as bad, if not worse, even massive ones like Skial.

Times are grim.

However, this post was not made to whine about our lot, or to lament the glorious bygone times. TF2 is an old game, but it is kept alive through its creative and dedicated player base. I don't want to go quietly into the dark. Let me be clear: no matter what sort of changes we implement on our end (such as the new End of the Line map), it will be a stopgap measure unless Valve changes its ways and realizes that communities like us are the way this game stays relevant.

We are important.

We are the customers they retain, the ones who keep coming back year after year in Pavlovian-like devotion to fragging. We buy keys and tickets. They need us.

I want solutions to this problem. I want to our cries of anger and frustration to be heard and answered by the corporate know-nothings at Valve. Right now we can join the chorus of disenfranchised and hacked-off community members by emailing Valve directly. Tell them why their quickplay system stinks. Tell them that through monopolizing their own game, they are alienating the very people who made it great. At the same time, Valve is consigning new scrubs to only play on Valve servers because they don't know any better. This situation is intolerable, and something has to give. I'd hate for it to be us.

I'd just like to wrap up with a quote from the big man himself, GabeN:

"If (game devs) don’t recognize that for a multiplayer game that the community of people playing that game has just as big an impact on the experience of somebody coming into that game as the game rules themselves do, then you’re going to be a terrible game designer."

---------------
tl;dr theatrics aside, seriously, message Valve.

You know it'd be great if some of us went on other TF2 community forums and posted this.

Just a hint.

HA! sancctified... if you get certain individuals to actually do this Ill clean out my bank account and buy you a maxs hat!

though on a serious note... Ive emailed them at the start of this mess already and no response from valve.

Be not the hero valve wants, but the hero the eGO community needs.

But really, I think it's very clear that the problems are on Valve's end.

So, uh, everyone write a letter to your fellow Congressman, er, game dev, and then we can settle this thing out.

Besides, Valve should respond. It'd be bad publicity if they didn't.

I believe a petition is in order. I feel it would increase the odds of an actual response from valve.

Email sent, ironically I could hop on a bus to Valve HQ.. I decided to send an email instead of egging the building with blue eggs.

Can't really be said better... If it stays like this some communities will drop the idea of TF2 to not waste money on servers

Same goes with other game companies, but they wouldn't dare treat the gaming community as pigs in human clothing. We can't demand a change, but can ask for a suggestion and as to why it should be implemented. Proof, Speculation and effect of the changes or none, they will respond.

I revise and emphasize my previous statement.

A petition should be made and we should spread this to other communities, not just eGO. I don't actually have the first clue about how to do this, but I am willing to help.

It's possible to at least get a response. Valve is not in fact the Walmart of gaming, they use consumer input to their own monetary gain. It may not actually be any better than Walmart, but in this case they're forgetting about their consumers. They'll be at least willing to answer if it becomes a big enough deal.

I'm completely serious about this. Shall we have a brainstorming session?

Email sent by me. One more voice. I'll sign a petition if someone starts one. I liked my eGo servers before they became vacant. :(

Thanks for looking at this, guys and gals, I am glad we are talking about this seriously. For those of you who already emailed, thanks for taking the time. You're beautiful.

A cursory look at other communities reveals we aren't alone. Others are struggling with similar difficulties keeping/filling servers. I know Skial protested their losses back in April, and Made in Texas seems to be reshuffling their servers too, but I doubt that will have much effect, long term. There have been several steam community posts/discussions about this already, but they are largely unfocussed.

I am interested in both contacting other groups to see if we could get a coalition going, and I am also interested in making an official petition. If anyone has any other ideas or concepts related to implementation, I am all ears.

Valve is not Wal-Mart. They have implemented hellaciously dumb ideas in the past, and then backed away from them when it was clear the idea did not work as intended (I am looking at you, sticky nerf). As I said in my initial post, communities are important, we are the veterans of the game, the ones with the most invested in this silly little hat simulator. It is foolish to starve our servers just because they made a disastrous tweak to quickplay.

Edit: Everything Insomnia Princess says below is gold. Listen to her.

Valve doesn't care they are the Wal-Mart of gaming

I don't see the analogy. Valve is an intentionally small organization. They are a boss-free company. No bureaucracy, no middle-management; just a group of peers, together with a common goal, each doing what they do best. They also incorporate player-created items, ideas and maps on a regular basis. They're very connected with the community in this sense. In what ways are they like Wal-Mart?

As for the OP, I agree with the sentiments but would advise against random spamming of their emails with your complaints. If you want to be taken seriously, an official petition might carry further weight and yield better results.

If you insist on spamming their emails, I'd respectfully ask that you do so representing yourself alone, without attaching the eGO name to it.

/my unsolicited 2 cents

I too sent an email.

Wall of text alert:

Dear Sirs,

I want to thank everyone on the TF team for all the work that you do to make TF 2 one of the best games there is available today. I have been playing TF2 for 7 years now, and played TFC before that, and the things you've done to make this game fresh and interesting after all that time is amazing.

However, as a long time player, as a clan member, as someone who is very proud of being part of a community of clanmates and pub players alike, I'm deeply concerned for the future. Ever since the change made to Quickplay earlier this year, I have noticed an alarming drop in the number of players frequenting my clan's servers.

I understand your desire to have the best servers available for your player base and the greater TF2 community. I feel that the decision to default Quickplay to Valve servers only, while well-intentioned, has hurt some of the most dedicated of your players.

As a player, as a clan member, as an admin...I want the same things you want, for people to have fun playing this game. Anyone can click a button and go to a random server with random people and be amused for a little while, but I believe that players that can build friendships in the kinds of community like my own will play this game much longer and enjoy it more.

Thank you for taking the time to read my concerns.

Respectfully,
Neil Robinson

I would add my name to an official petition (if sanctioned by leadership)

I'm so very proud to be a member of EGO and I want others to feel the same proudness I have for our division let our voices be heard!

A petition seems like the most productive idea, I'm all for it
