I got kicked for it tonight. I'm not really sure who the admin was but here's my list of mostly harmless interjections and colorful language I use quite often. Tell me when I say something inappropriate.

darn
crap
gosh
dang
bastard
geez

Bastard is probably the worst thing I say on there which I land jokingly when someone has been owning me. The usual response is an LOL by the guy who owned me. Meanwhile it took a few minutes to kick the guy dropping F bombs and one guy kept using the Lord's name in vain. I think Coldsaw or something like that was on there, but I'm not sure if he was the one who kicked me. Personally I think saying "Jesus Christ" in place of some 4 letter words is far worse than any of these. Perhaps I'm out of step with social norms. Correct me if I'm wrong.

dont use bastard, everything else looks ok, im sure the admin who kicked you had a good reason for it

For myself, the intent and usage of vocabulary means a lot more to me than the words you use. It is entirely possible to be abrasive and offensive without ever uttering a 'curse' word. Though, if that was the worse you said and you were kicked with no warning I would like to know who was the kicking admin.

I like having clean servers, but I've been wondering as to what words are acceptable as well, mainly because the characters in TF2 actually use some rather profane language themselves, which isn't really controllable.

One eg/ego told me that the curse slang for butt was acceptable, while another told me it was not. Also I was in the server yesterday on badlands when somebody said dang and damn and they were warned, they only said it about the situation, like a sentry being shot down.

I have been wondering about the rules as well, like which words are bad.

I would say any word you cant say on network TV or radio would be a swear word because that what we use as the standard for everything else.

Here's the key: Admins are human, so there is going to be some variation. We're usually light touches at this sort of thing, ranging from those who will do nothing to, well, Officer Friendly. !lol Love ya, Officer.

What's my standard? If I wouldn't want you to teach it to my 4 year old, I'm going to warn you. If you repeat, I'm going to kick. Come back in and do it again, I'll request a ban. The only word I see on that list, as others have said, that I find objectionable is "bastard." I'm also of the "usage is everything" camp.

If you want to be safe, resort to creativity rather than profanity. You'll get more laughs with no chance of the banhammer coming down. We have players of all ages on our servers, and we take pride in providing an environment in which they can feel comfortable.

If your attitude is one that can give people a bad impression of what eGO is all about, I don't care what words you use, you're on my bad list. I'll warn on the first offense and possibly the second. Once it becomes clear that you just don't get it, I'll either kick or ban. I use ban when I'm concerned that your attitude and behavior can have a severely negative impact on the server and you're just not worth the risk. There are plenty of people out there that know how to play, have fun, and keep their behavior and language in check.

So, there isn't a hard and fast rule. If we made one, it would be abused. It is up to the impression each admin gets from you and their experience to determine who stays and who goes. The best advice I can give is to listen to the admin. We have good admins here. They aren't going to just jump you without reason. If they say something and sound a warning, pay attention and don't do anything like what they were warning against. Do this, and you have no problem.

I've been told that Damn was acceptable, actually it was kind of argued against me when i requested that someone watch their language which I thought was odd...

Also, i've seen admins warn for much much more modest words and abbreviations. (i.e - freaking, frickin, mofo, wtf, bs etc.)

So I guess what I'm saying is, I have NO IDEA what is acceptable and what is not. Not that I say anything beyond Crap and maybe an occasional wtf but thats about it.

When it comes to calling someone anything, try not to say it at all, even though you think its not bad.

I say damn and crap sometimes but i never go to call someone a name, i just laugh or say nice.

I know self expression is something that we can't help to do, it natural, but theres places not to do that and our gaming severs is one. If need too, get on vent, play with people on our servers and express yourself there, talk with other members, and have fun.

Also, when is comes to swear words, the basics are enforced but when it comes to something your not sure about, its your choice, half of admin is self judgment, don't be afraid to use it and thats why we give members admin powers, we believe you can make the correct actions BASED on your judgment. Still not sure? PM other members and get their opinion, i still ask for help on some phrases.

Nobody likes name calling, best to keep those words out of chat.

Happy Hunting!

I think these explain it nicely, from my perspective. My son, freshly six, likes to come and watch me play games on occasion. He asks what's going on, and really gets into talking about the action and all the other people online. He's fascinated by the notion of people far away being virtually in my house.

As such, I was thrilled to find eGO because I can play on a server all day and know that admins are looking out for that sort of thing. If someone is modeling behavior that wouldn't be appropriate in person, much less in a virtual world, they take care of it.

My standard has always been this: If it would make me uncomfortable in my home, with my children standing next to me, then it's not okay online.

I was the kicking admin. Booyah called another non-eGO player a bastard in (all) chat. It's nothing personal, but you are a recruit, you should know better than to break our server's rules. You reconnected, asked why, I told you, and you disagreed with me. I told you I had the final say(both rules are in the MOTD on all servers and in the "becoming an =(e)=" thread). This is the place to ask these sorts of questions. Do NOT challenge an admin while on our servers.

To be honest with you, I'll probably warn a recruit next time so I can justify asking for a temp ban if s/he argues with me in front of the other players.

If someone used the F bomb I was not there when that happened. Booyah and I were on the same team, so it couldn't have been voicechat. In that game, around the same time, I kicked Frog3 like 6 times until Owl came in and laid down the banhammer for us. This was only after warnings/mute/silence and he kept reconnecting. I don't think he ever used the F bomb, but he had an appalling attitude.

I think this topic is worthy of discussion. I probably wouldn't kick someone for saying damn, but I'd probably ask them to tone it down if it got excessive. Someone already mentioned the language the classes use(Engineer), hence my acceptance of damn. I don't think I'd warn if someone said God or Jesus as an exclamation. Unless it was abusive or excessive.

damn and hell are completely acceptable, but all others which you have questions about, that are worse than damn, are most likely not allowed

damn and hell are completely acceptable...[/quote1203286805]
There not "COMPLETELY" acceptable, if i see players using hell and damn obsessively to the point where im sick of it, i will let them know. Again, its not the word, its how its used!

Hmm..... Well, I typically just do not swear at all. I may say darn, but that is it. Yes, I do swear plenty outside of the game world, but only when I have a reason.

I don't have a reason to swear in a game, and the ego servers are also meant to be family friendly, so of course I don't swear on them.

Asking what is a kickable/bannable thing to say is like asking a Police Officer what constitutes "reasonable suspicion". It varies between each officer. It's up to every admin's discretion as we are protecting and serving the eGO servers, so if something is potentially harmful to the server then it needs to be handled.

In the future I'll jokingly type "<insert name> you jerk" instead of "bastard" when somebody owns me. I don't consider bastard cursing so that's why I had no clue what you were talking about, and clearly from this thread there is no reason I should have known better. I was kicked without warning and utterly confused at how my considerably clean server banter got me kicked. It's a gray area. Now I know it crosses the line for some of the admins, and I'll be more careful.

Heh. This is something that really should be codified so it isn't up to the delicate sensibilities of each and every admin. As an example, Lafinass, I was on a server recently when an eGO told a player with the handle of "Badass" to change his handle to something less offensive. I really wish you'd been there to provide contrast. :)
