Mission: Define swearing in eGO servers

I think you can say poop and be effective, it is actually a fun word to say because it is funny when you go poooooop.

You can also say, bob sagat, or just go hulk smash, or snikt <--the noise wolverines claws make, it is copyright so becareful.

The Admin FAQ has some fairly clear guidelines. There is always going to be a lot of subjectivity in managing language, but good guidelines help reduce the conflict.

Here's the key: Admins are human, so there is going to be some variation. We're usually light touches at this sort of thing, ranging from those who will do nothing to, well, Officer Friendly. !lol Love ya, Officer.

What's my standard? If I wouldn't want you to teach it to my 4 year old, I'm going to warn you. If you repeat, I'm going to kick. Come back in and do it again, I'll request a ban. The only word I see on that list, as others have said, that I find objectionable is "bastard." I'm also of the "usage is everything" camp.

If you want to be safe, resort to creativity rather than profanity. You'll get more laughs with no chance of the banhammer coming down. We have players of all ages on our servers, and we take pride in providing an environment in which they can feel comfortable.

QFT, except I don't have a 4 year old XD

Ok guys, bastard is definitely a no, but don't say things like, "This is a huge crap team..." because that gets me ticked, I will warn, then kick.

This has always been a delicate issue, and has been aruged over obsessivley... especially on the DoD side, where I spend most of my time. I think the general consensus here is that if you wouldn't want a child to hear it, then don't say it, seems pretty good. But I also agree that there should be more solid standards. I too have seen people get warned for words like "damn" or "crap", and frankly, even I don't think "bastard" is all that bad either. All those are words you hear at 5 PM on a network television station.

I'm of the mindset that less is more.... there's no reason to be language nazi's. Just deal with it if its extreme, or disruptive to gameplay. The occasional slip up of mild curse words isn't something people need to fret over. Besides, we all recognize those that are real jerks, and those are intentionally trying to disrupt the server...

Actually, the rather clean attitude and upstandingness of eGO is one of the reasons I decided to join. That said, I do have a tendency to say damn a bit. As in "can somebody take out that damn sentry" or "damn spies". I try to keep it toned down, but just as the admins are human, so are the players. Sometimes we make mistakes.

The biggest question I have is with "effin". I do like to use that a bit, but I was wondering what the prevailing attitude was regarding that. Personally, I don't find it that bad, but I don't have kids and spend a lot of time in bars, so my attitude might be a little skewed. ;)

What I don't understand is why actually type it in the first place... If you're annoyed then surely you can just yell whatever you like at the top of your voice in your own home (off mic). But to actually take the time to write it, whats the point?

Looks like everyone here has a general understanding of what is and isn't allowed and after reading all these great answers, we have the knowledge to know what to look for.

I believe you guys and gals have the right judgment to take care of any situation that happens in our servers. Im seeing good things here!

I will be speaking with the Rangers and see if we can get a more concrete list of things that are acceptable. Also I believe our admin seminars will be able to teach you guys alot, not just how to use your admin but the judgement part of it. What I mean is some of the questions that were asked here everyone might handle a little differently, well the seminars are there to make it more understandable of whats acceptable and whats not. Also when to handle a problem and when to not worry about it, that kind of stuff.

Most of it is experience, I agree with Lafinass about context because it makes all the difference for me.
Most of the time you can tell if someone is being a smartass or not, also if they are complaining alot then you can probably tell they are going to cause trouble.

Here is an example, last night I was asked by a couple of eGO's what I thought of a player named Parry Hussy. Anyone thats a little older will automatically know that's an offhand reference to hairy pussy, now I admit the name is questionable but the way I usually judge something like this is if the player is causing any trouble or not.

In this guys case he is a regular in our Dustbowl server and plays there every night, I dont think the guy has ever said a single word that I have noticed. So in his case I let it slide, on the other hand if he joined our clan we would ask him to change his name out of respect before accepting him.

Now if he just joined the server and instantly starts being an jackass, first I am telling him to cool it AND that he needs to change his name. In my opinion its his right to have a slightly questionable name like that as long as he follows our rules, when he steps out of line not only does he get corrected but he also loses the privelege of keeping that name in our server.

Make sense?

I love that Drunken!

That will clear so many things out. I always see people with names like those and see other members wondering if they should be asked to change their name.

I couldn't of said it better myself!

One thing to note. I am glad the admins are cool about stuff like crap or hell or damn if it's said real fast like "Aww damn got hit by a crit" and that was it. It's the jackass players that keep on going. Here's an observation: I know when I get killed sometimes it's frustrating and I'll say something out loud in my apartment, but it takes effort to press the talk key and even more effort to hit U or Y and then type it in all chat. At that point in time enough time has passed that your conscience should kick in to say don't do it.

This reminds me of the simpsons episode where Bart and Milhouse where cutting out swear words from the bible, and Bart say: Since these swears are in the bible, we can use them anytime we want!
To which Milhouse says: I don't think "Leviticus" is a swear...

Oh, man, when I was teaching a kid told me he could use "jackass" because it was in the Bible. I told him it wasn't. He insisted it was. I said, "We don't use the Bible as the guide for school rules, but fine, if you can find it, you can use it." I handed him my copy of the King James Version of the Bible. His eyes popped out of his head. I didn't bother to tell him that the word used was simply "ass," rather than "jackass."

I was disciplined for having pulled out a Bible in a public school room, but it was easily worth the look on that kid's face.

no one will keep me from swearing, i will speak my mind i say F$&$ every other time i die embarrassingly... but not in the chat ;-) or mic chat...
