I couldnt sleep last night so started looking around the steampowered forums (offical valve forums) and was very surprised and upset to find this thread

http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=659504

I want everyone to go and read it from start to finish, its a long read of over 15 pages. I dont want anyone posting there unless it is with maturity and class, also have your facts straight and DO NOT say you are in eGO. We have organized Flippy the Squirrel and Monkeybits to start up group of good writers to wage war against ignorance in the steam TF2 forums.

These people litteraly hate us(not eGO but general custom stuff like maps and 32 players) so bad they think we should be banned....

We must stand up and fight for our right to be placed on the internet tab. We will fight this war with patience, maturity, class, facts and Edge Gamers Organization's good reputation. I am very angry that people would say things about other servers and players that basically we should be BANNED for not playing VANILLA TF2!

Read the thread so you know the kind of morons and facists we are fighting against. We are working on a pettition to send to valve, we will talk about it at tomorrow's clan meeting.

DO NOT POST ANYTHING UGLY OR IN BAD TASTE! ALSO THE ONLY ONE'S WHO HAVE PERMISSION TO SAY THEY REPRESENT EGO FOR NOW IS FLIPPY THE SQUIRREL AND MONKEYBITS.

I was talking to Monkey about this very thread earlier...the vehemence these people feel toward what they see is "custom" and the even the very definition of "custom" to them is a sad thing indeed. Let's help these folks out guys. Show them what a great group of people they're missing out on by hiding us in the back room.

Wow. Now I remember why I stopped frequenting internet forums and never read comments that people post. (Except for here, of course. You are all mature)

What I don't understand is how are servers are custom. Should a 12 player server be considered custom because it isn't 24? The reason I played on eGO servers in the first place was that you ran what I considered to be a vanilla game. Normal respawn times and no funky mods.

Vanilla rules state 24 people to a server, normal respawn times, etc. etc. by Valve's standards. The simple fact that we run 32 man servers has relegated us to a Custom tab.

Ya, im a little confused on what is called a vanilla server, i understand the whole concept that it is plain, but what server specs. Too bad custom servers cant just be the servers who have custom maps and mods, unless hlxstats is a mod, in which case that kinda stinks :S

HLStats is considered a mod, since it's not part of Valve's original concept. Also, adding any more or less players than the standardized 24 is considered a modification. Ergo, we get the boot.

Yes, it is ridiculous. I read it when you posted it on Vent. I can easily defend the position of our servers with maturity, but wow...

It's even worse than that. My understanding is that a 32 slot server is fine, so long as you are running a Windows server. If you're running Linux, 32 slot is custom. Also, servers that are not VAC secured show up in the regular "internet" or vanilla tab. If you can't mod the server, how could you permit players to use cheating programs and still pretend your server is vanilla? It does seem that recent posts have raised the level of the debate, and that's a good thing. Let's attract Valve's attention with the quality posts this community can generate.

I personally find it kind of crazy that they would think of doing this, I can understand the whole thing about other maps or weird mods, but hlxstats isnt that big of a deal, it isnt like it effects teh game play that much. I think more players would actually make it more fun, I dont see why changing the amount of players is that big of a deal either.

Turning on all-talk gets you put into the custom tab.

Could you be more petty about it? Really?

Heck, with as petty as the classification of 'Vanilla' and 'Custom' are, the Vanilla should be on a separate tab from the main list. Not the other way around.

You're hitting the heart of the matter, Kolak. What we do can hardly be considered "custom" since we're working within normal, albeit creative, parameters. Our minute changes to the game, which have no real negative effect on gameplay - and, in fact ENHANCE gameplay, as is our clan goal - is putting us in very real danger of being banned if this is allowed to go through. This is why eGO, with our huge following of loyal TF2 players - old and new - needs to stand up and help spread the message maturely and respectfully. If it's a bunch of compheads screaming at each other, Valve's not going to be inclined to listen; but if a group of educated, intelligent, and passionate adults (regardless of actual age) puts forth a strong argument, they would HAVE to listen.

I can't believe the immaturity of some people... so glad I found these servers... most of those people that posted had some pretty weird logic... There was a guy that compared someone using a plugin to bypass the filter to aimbotting... wow...

Some people are so lazy that they must complain about something that would take minimal effort to avoid... Most of them were just complaining about "all of these 32 man insta spawn servers are ruining the game!". If you don't like playing in 32 man servers, then just don't join them... And most servers INCLUDE "instant spawn" or something of that form in the server name to attract people. They act like they are being threatened by terrorists who are trying to waste 2 minutes of their time every day that they server surf...

I usually try and stay away from the steam forums, and this is a reminder why... It astounds me that people go to these great of lengths and spend this much time and effort posting about how all of these servers should be banned by their IP for god's sake. Banned by their IP? This would mean that if a company were to have a server admin use a cvar command to bypass a filter and got banned, then the whole company would get tanked. Some people just don't think about what they are saying, and it comes across in a pretty hateful way to communities like us. If some of those people can spend this much time lamenting over this "non vanilla server" nonsense, they they can easily take the extra 30 seconds to find a server that doesn't have mods listed in the title.

I can't believe that hlxstats is considered custom. It does nothing at all to affect game play.

I actually find it ridiculous that people would go to such lengths in order to have their "vanilla" servers. In my personal opinion, they should simply add their favorite servers to their "favorites" tab and forget about it. Even if the server they join is not the server they had hoped for, it is a mattere of only 30 seconds or so to join another one. The sheer fact that they believe servers such as ours should be banned shows that they cannot deal with inconvenience. Yes, i strongly agree with drunkensailor, we must fight against with with our trademark maturity and class.

I was actually going to compose my own post, but yours pretty much hits all of my points. I'll just say "ditto".

I'll just say this: Valve needs a looser definition of what constitutes a "custom" server.

valve doesn't understand their consumer -.-
cant believe they didnt just put a vanilla button filter mod

i finally understand why population has declined thoguh

These are all great points guys, just what that thread needs...go forth and post! :)
