For those who have played, is it genuinely a fresh idea or is it just fun for co-op or just because one simple feature?
It's the mix of features and ideas that make it fun, IMO, and I think Techland really learned from Dead Island in terms of what to do to make a truly fun and interesting zombie game. I won't lie, part of what makes the game great is that it takes a bunch of really good ideas and mashes them into one game
It's sort of like what Dead Island could've been. i know there are some people that love DI and I'm not gonna trash it or anything, but in my honest opinion Dying Light is infinitely more well-executed. There are some new systems (parkour, a re-imagined RPG-style XP progression system for skills), and other returning and revamped features in place (crafting, gunplay, a FAR superior melee combat system). I also seriously love the vast open world and side mission system
As you progress through the story, you unlock more and more of Harran (the game world you're in) and as far as I can tell, there is absolutely nothing stopping you from going back and completing tons of bonus content. I've pumped 16 hours into the game and have just barely completed half of the storyline, and I have friends who are reporting that they completed the game with a handful of side missions who are clocking in at 35, 50, 70+ hours
The game has a substantial amount of content and a lot of neat little features aside from just the story, including the ability to rescue survivors, an Elder Scrolls-style lockpicking system, a fun collect-and-craft function and the ability to upgrade, modify, and repair weapons. The multiplayer is fun, but it almost makes the game a little too easy thanks to the ability to revive, and by revived by, other survivors. I haven't gotten to try the Be The Zombie mode yet, but from what I hear it adds a truly fearful element of PvP since it's REALLY hard to beat a player zombie solo -- but again, with MP, it gets easier with a party of another/other player(s).
All in all just based on how FUN the game is and how much content there is to play through, I can wholly recommend the game as I feel that it is completely worth the price tag. You can even find some deals and sales on the game if you search hard enough (I've seen it for $10 off the physical PC edition on Amazon and $10-$15 off on various sites on Dealzon). I got my copy for $45 using my steam wallet funds I got from selling guns and cases on CSGO, so >.>
tl;dr: It's a genuinely fun zombie game with a lot of innovative or improved upon features; and in a market that's absolutely flooding to the point of saturation with zombie games, that says something
