I've always wanted to be able to draw/paint, it's always been one of those things that I wanted to pick up but had no idea how to do so.

So I was wondering if anyone in EGO would be able to offer any suggestions.

How would I start?
How would I learn?
Is it even possible for me (someone who was never very good with drawing) to be able to pick it up with a little work?

Are you interested in Traditional (Pencil/Paper) or Digital drawing?

I'd say traditional but that's just because I don't really know how digital drawing works.

Digital is usually done though a Tablet and a drawing program, such as Photoshop, Sai, or Gimp.

For traditional stoofs, just get some paper, a good pencil, and start drawing some simple objects on your desk.

Would you recommend following youtube videos on drawing specific animals/objects/scenes or would that be a bad idea?

Tutorials are the best places to start. Just look for some basic tutorials; perspective, composition, and lighting. Once you get a good grasp of those you can move into more complex stuff like basic anatomy and environment thumbs. The important thing is to keep at it.

After that, you can do what called "Master mark" exercises. Basically find something you really like and try to replicate it as best you can by looking at it (on a second monitor or a side-by-side) WITHOUT tracing.

For traditional, I'd suggest watching videos to look at the thought process behind drawing and study how things are built (blueprints or anatomy). A lot of practice helps! I try to draw one thing from scratch and one thing I see in real life a day.

As for digital, I use Adobe PS6. As a gamer, I have fairly good mouse control so I don't use a tablet to draw. I find it much easier to draw with a mouse. I think AutoDes kjust published some free 2D software called SketchBook(?). You could play with that.
