Well I got S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and it runs fine, until i get in game. I have Vista. I have a Geforce 8600 GT - definetely capable of running the game. But when i get in game, i can still move and stuff my the graphics basically freeze and scramble.
Basically it what happens is, what happens when your video card isnt good enough. But the recommended video card for this is a 7900 GT.
Can anyone help with this problem?

Well seeing as the recommended graphics card is a 7900 GT and you have an even better card than it it shouldn't be anything to do with compatibility with the card.

Are your graphics card drivers up to date?

go to C:\NVIDIA\WinVista\ or whatever and there should be a folder in it with the version of your forceware drivers, then go to nvidia site and search for drivers for your card and see if the newest ones match your current one

You can see your forceware version inside the Nvidia Control Panel Applet, I believe, but you can always find the installed driver's version by checking the device's properties inside the Device Manager.

I prefer the 169.28's, but you could try the 174.74 if you still have problems.

Edit: Compatibility mode shouldn't be needed, except for the oldest of games. Maybe 'Run As Administrator', though Vista's UAC should ask anyways (if it's not disabled).

By the way, do you also have it patched to v.xx5?

I don't know about you, but on my radeon card, I've consistantly had to use older catalyst drivers to run HL2 due to compatibility issues. Never had any problem with nvidia drivers tho.

Well, it's no secret that the newest drivers aren't always the 'best'.

Which radeon, btw? On my 9800pro AIW, I always got the best performance, image quality, and stability with the Cat 6.6 (but have to use 7.10 or newer for tf2). I'd also recommend OmegaDrivers, as they tend to offer the best stability and image quality (stay away from NGO, DNA, or DH drivers, though -- they break too much in their releases).

Nocturne,

I'm using 7.5 drivers currently. I was using some older drivers but performance took a hit HL2 won't even load with anything 7.8+ last time I checked. How rediculous is that?

My currently card is an XGE 1300 Radeon AGP 512mb. Yea yea I know it could be better...but I'm running off of an older Athlon DDR board and I'm going to need a bundle upgrade to move up to the next level of performance.
