For the artistically talented, a question

How would one take these images, and make the background entirely transparent for insertion into an existing image (as a new layer for example), or extract just the outline of the black and white image for insertion into an existing image?

... i dont understand... so you just want the outline of the feather... not the interior?

well if that is what he wants, and if i had my pc (which has photoshop CS3 on it) i could do that for you... but my mom *ugh... i know* takes random stuff away from me and i dont like it, and this time it happened to be my pc, even tho its MINE!!! but whatever, if no one does it by the time i get it back, ill do it for you

working on getting the outline one

just open the image and go to Filter > Extract (Alt+Ctrl+X) and highlight the edges then switch to the paint bucket and click the inside and that will remove the background. its harder to do it that way with the outlined image because it cant determine which part of the image to remove so it ends up removing some of the actual inside that you want because of similar colors.

extending on hwat hatick said, use extract tool. The way it works is that you make sure the green smudgey line paint thingey has the part you want on one side, and the part you dont on the other. So basicly if your cutting out a finger, you'd have the pink finger and the white background both in the green line and thus the edge in there too and the program finds the edges. The thiner the green line the better the results, and like hatick said you then use the fill tool from the extract panel on the inside of what you want.

I'm assuming you don't have Photoshop, otherwise you wouldn't be asking, so here is the red feather that haticK did but in a format you can use:

Just an FYI for others, if you are making an image with a transparent background for others to use in a non-photo editing piece of software, save it as a .png. That works best for transparencies. If you guys are using it for a web based photo though Monkey, it might not be recognized. Let me know and I can switch it to a .gif.

i updated mine, i figured he had photoshop because he mentioned wanting to put just the feather ontop of an existing image and only a psd and tif can do that, but thx for reminding me just incase. ive found that its a pain trying to cut out the outlined one just by the extract tool.

I never assume someone has photoshop and since you can also copy and paste the .png in photoshop, that's what I always use. I like the quality of the .png over the .tif also. In fact I rarely use .tif anymore. With web stuff, I usually do a .gif. You don't get the same quality, but the file size is much more user friendly.
I don't really like the extract tool unless I have a very cut and dried image to be extracting. The pen tool and eraser are my best friends when doing any sort of extracting or retouching, but then again, I'm kinda old school
Are you a desiner, haticK? Always like to have other people to talk with when I can't figure out how to get something to do what I want.

We do have Photoshop. My problem is that I have made something in another program (Inkscape) and the two aren't seeming compatible. I'm hoping to be able to lock what I've made and get it to Photoshop somehow where I can then put the feather on it. This is my first time doing anything like this so it is a learning experience. I appreciate all the help.
