As some of you guys who have worked for some time now, you find a job which is the bee?s knee?s and you stay there, the ambulance service was like that for me, but it was not to be. This day about nine months before I left the service we had to pick up a woman patient who lived in one of those old houses in Bethnal Green, which was 4 stories up. She lived on the third floor. Unfortunately she weighed about 17 stone and the stairs in that house was only about three feet wide and there was no landing for the next set of stairs, you had to turn around from one staircase directly onto the next stair case. This was very difficult on these stairs as you can imagine. My partner was a skinny 6?3 tall and I was 5?8 and strong, so I had the bottom of the stretcher. When we got to the first bend and I was navigating around it he suddenly swung the stretcher around without warning, so I got all the weight on me, you heard my 5 lumbar disc go. but we manage to get her into the ambulance. You can imagine the language I used on him? I managed to carry on for about four months before going sick. So I have been in pain from that accident until now, approximately 55 years.
But back to working before that accident.
We had a call to go to a traffic accident in Dalston, it was early evening dark and raining, when we got there we found a man who had been knocked down by a car and there was blood running down the gutter, so we patched him up and took him to the German Hospital in Dalston.
We took him in and put him on a bed in a cubicle and got him comfortable, when the nurse came in she burst into tear?s, I said ?what was wrong? She said ?look at him where do I start? I comforted her and said ?start at his head, clean him and look after any injury then move on down his body?. She thanked me and got started, we phoned up for another job.
We saw her a few days later and she remembered and came up and said ?Hello, that man only had cut?s and bruises and two broken rib?s? we all laughed about it, and said our good byes.
The German Hospital was built by Germans in 1890?s I believe and staffed by Germans through two world wars. The local British residents in the area used to believe they were all spies during the War?s.
This day could have had a very strange finish, but.
Mid morning we had to take a patient to Heath Row Airport (London Airport)
The trip went well until after we had dropped the patient off.
We returned to our ambulance and radio?ed in , we got a call to an emergency
So my partner who was driving that day took of , I got out our road map to confirm the road and realized we were heading into the next county, this was not good, so I called up the control again to confirm, control said that was correct, so I asked ?Since when have we been doing County work? She replied ?This was standard procedure? I asked ?When was a London ambulance required to do this work in Middlesex?? She replied ?Are you a London ambulance ? I replied ?Yes we just did a job to Heath Row? She said ?I am sorry we have picked you up be mistake, carry on to your control?. That could of been a costly mistake as it would have taken us over an hour to get there. You should have heard the ribbing we got when we got back to our station.
