TF2 Division, I would like to welcome you to a new age of Team Fortress 2. Yesterday's update was HUGE, and not just in all the changes they made to classes/weapons/competitive, etc.

On Wednesday when they released the first info about the possible changes to the way Valve servers and Quickplay would work, I was honestly pretty nervous. We didn't know what was going to happen, as it seemed like every change over the past years made it harder and harder to keep our servers running.

So, after downloading the update and restarting our servers...I was pleasantly surprised. No, I was ECSTATIC. This is exactly what was needed. I have long held that Valve needed to reduce the number of quickplay servers that they had and put resources elsewhere, and this is what they did. At the moment, there are no longer any open and public Valve servers. All quickplay joining is for either competitive or the casual gamemode.

So yes, this is true that our servers, for now, will not be getting any players through the automated system, but for anyone who was playing last night, this didn't seem to matter one bit. (there is reportedly a way to search community servers through quickplay, but you would need to do certain stuff to get it to work). All connections are either direct connect or through a browser.

So basically what this means is a lot of people who use to only play on valve pubs will now be looking for community servers (us) to fill that gap. We want this to remain this way. With that in mind, here are a few things to do/remember.

1). Admining needs to be on point. If people came from pubs where there are basically no rules, be sure to do the best job you can enforcing what needs to be enforced. They aren't in "say whatever you want" land now.

2.) Filling still needs to be done. For now, all community servers are on a level playing field. They look for a map in the browser, good ping, etc, and if there are people they will join it. No one automatically filtering in once we reach a certain amount of people. Invite friends, ask leadership for a fill announcement, IDLE! Idleing helps a lot!

3.) Recruit! Lot's of new people joining the servers. Let them know that there is more to TF2 than playing with randoms on Valve servers.

4.) This last one is a personal request from me. Email the TF Team at Valve, and let them know how much you appreciate the change to help community servers (along with anything else about the update you like). Be positive! There are unfortunately a lot of people complaining about pubs being gone. Let them know that not everyone thinks that. You can email them HERE.

I believe they made this change for the long-term health of TF2. At some point they were going to have to remove all their servers, so they figured it was best to do it now while there were still communities to help out. Let them know this is a good idea!

Thanks everyone, and have fun!

Does this mean we should introduce a new server now? It seems that if all servers are on a level playing field why not throw another one into the mix?

We will want to see how this plays out a bit longer, but it is being discussed.

Oh wait, that server actually did really well when it was popular. They wouldn't bring that back eh. It was only one of our most popular servers.

that requires them filling it so of course it wont work

what does this post even mean lol?

even the best servers out there need to be filled. + any map would work fine after this update

He's referring to the fact that we lost 2Fort because seemingly nobody wanted to fill it.

Might have to come quietly back now that valve servers are gone >.<. Still interesting they chose now of all times to revert quickplay.

it means the moment that turbine and dust bowl were filled people never came to help 2fort. the non ego regulars would try to get it started but never succeeded

*Also, it sounds like this is back to the old ways of finding servers. I thing eGO will be better for it, not having to compete against Valve Servers. I never liked the idea of Valve servers anyway.

Because of this update I'm eventually going to stop playing TF2. Can't wreck noobs on valve servers easily anymore...

Shudders... please no. Waaay to many bad memories of certain O's endlessy spawncamping with kritzkrieg stickies there. Would love a swiftwater server though.

ohh I miss those days so much :( think about it every time I play TF2

it would certainly bring back a ton of old members

Sorry if I missed a thread that already answers this question, but how are our servers doing with this update?
