Tech Help Windows 10 forced upgrade

This is mostly copied from Microsoft's community as its the same problem: So my mom was just telling me that the upgrade advisor keeps trying to install Windows 10 when she never clicked on the window pop up to allow it to install on her desktop. However, when we try to restart the computer (3 times now), all it wants to do is show this screen. We can bring up the start menu as that is visible, but seems that the upgrade advisor screen decides to take priority over any action we wish to do.

Is it possible to reinstall Win 7 using the current product key we currently use? Also how do we go about backing up stuff that is saved on the hard drive?

Does Ctrl+Alt+Del get you task manager at all?

if you already on windows 10 then GO to Start Menu ---> Settings ---> Update & security ---> Recovery ---->>>

if not then just plug the HDD to another computer and back up everything then do normal format with your win7 key

Well heres the problem: its still on Win 7 trying to "force" Windows 10 into the hard drive, but the upgrade advisor says that the installation has failed and needs to try again.

@Ezekiel, its interesting that you ask that because my mom says that it started after she pressed those keys actually. Not sure how pressing those keys would enable such an attempt tho...

Doesn't the free upgrade end today? Then you won't have anything to worry about, right? Or was it reserved or something, I can't remember,,,,,?

you can still use your windows 7 key, just back up then format. Also try restoring to a day or week ago

Ok so heres what happened: I had the ethernet cable pulled from the desktop (had to print off a label for some products to be shipped for my mom) & accidently forgot to plug it back in. Started it up & apparently all was fine. However, I noticed that the Win 10 icon on the right hand side has a yellow ! sign next to it. Needless to say, im not touching it at all!

I will try starting it up with the ethernet cable still in, but I believe all should be fine (for now). Im glad that my mom didnt have to sue Microsoft (she doesnt exactly have that kinda $$ laying around anyways).

unless she's a small business owner and lost profits off of it, she wouldn't win.

Not to mention they already resolved the "say no" bug, so she wouldn't win anyways.

That being said:

For non-Enterprise versions of Windows, the notification icon can be suppressed through the Windows registry. To do this, set the following registry value:

Subkey: HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Gwx
DWORD value: DisableGwx = 1

To block the upgrade to Windows 10 through Windows Update, specify the following registry value:

Subkey: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate
DWORD value: DisableOSUpgrade = 1

If these values don't work, the only option would be a restore / reinstall.

I did not have good experience with Windows 10, I tried it for about 3 weeks and decided to go back to Windows 7. Windows 7 is sooo much more stable and better going through it and whatnot. I won't be upgrading to Windows 10. I just end the process for the upgrade in the task manager and that is about it, I don't care that I do it every time on startup.

I have never had forced update issues with any of my Windows 7 Ultimate PCs. Every single one in my office has their own key and we have never seen a forced update, or even a window pop up asking about a free update. Odd.

In terms of my personal PC, I have installed Win 10 on my gaming desktop and my gaming laptop and both have served me very well. I like the more modern approach on the OS in terms of design. It's been very stable, no crashes, blue screens, or major bugs yet. Just my little two cents Cheers!

Only issue i seem to get in windows 10 is this from time to time...

I had it for almost a year, went back to 7 for stability while doing video rendering

No problems other than it not being as easy to just plug and play your audio devices, it took awhile for me to get my speakers working.

I will not be upgrading to Windows 10 and I don't think that I ever will. I hate that Windows had a popup for upgrading to Windows 10. Trying it was a disaster, maybe not that bad but the layout is not good at all. I wish that they kept the Windows 7 layout on Windows 10 but changed certain features so that it is not a crazy way to find something. I don't know, I think that it was a bad decision on their part to have a popup.

The other thing is that I hate change, I have been using the operating systems that are not 8 and 10. So for Windows to have a very different layout bothers me a lot. My laptop is Windows 8.1 but I like how the layout is cause it is very similar to Windows 7 so I don't mind as much. I am not going to upgrade my laptop to Windows 10, I just can't stand how it is and whatnot. So enough of my ranting. lol
