I've been contacted by Hoplon Infotainment in Brazil asking if we'd like to have a look at their game, "Heavy Metal Machines", currently in closed beta . They are on Steam and are launching a new character called "Full Metal Judge".

I have keys to give to the first 10 members who send me a PM containing the words I WANT A HMM KEY PLEASE. You MUST write a brief review of the game within a week. Just a few simple sentences telling them what you like or dislike about the game will do.

EDIT: Tuna says I should let everyone know "the game weighs 4.7 GB on Steam".

Not one PM. Nobody wants to try out this game?

I can try it out and review it. I'm not really finding much about this game to be honest. It's not pulling up in Steam, there's little info on their site, and I don't have Facebook. So, I'll bite and check it out. Where would the review get posted to?

Thanks for stepping up B Dawg and Tuna. I have 8 more keys folks. PM me if you want to help out.

hell yeah i didnt see this post.

one of my favorite games ever

Ric, Stealth and Scott have been sent keys. Thanks fellas. 5 more. Who wants them?

Okay, here's my overall review.

The good:
The game's tutorial plays a bit like Rocket League meets Twisted Metal. Graphically, the game's visuals are nice, stunning, hand drawn. I'm getting 60 fps, and the game runs smooth as melted butter off a newborn's butt. Music is good, but gets a bit buggy at times. At one time, I had 2 music tracks from the game playing at once, it was weird. Overall, the game has some promise, and I can see myself spending some time to play the game, get in-game currency, and unlocking stuff for my car.

One can host a game, maybe we can get together to all try it out in a co-op game. I could even stream it and link it here.

Neutral:
I plan to try this again a bit later, because I encountered some type of bug that would not let me join a match. Seems that the only option to play a game is to co-op between 4 human players and 4 bots. That's fine, however, I cannot start/enter a match after I choose my character/car. Could be a windows 10 bug, could be a game bug.

Bad:
This is definitely a controller game. It feels like a Why won't is recognize certain buttons on my Xbox One controller? It shows them in the tutorial (press RT to accelerate) and XYAB buttons to fire weapons, but, only half the controller works. Had to play with KB/Mouse. Probably a beta issue, who knows. I even remapped the buttons within the settings (It's under Options then Commands, which is weird) and it still wouldn't work.

Like I said, I plan to retry this later on. I'll write more/edit this post afterwards, hopefully after being able to get into an in-game match.

EDIT:

Okay, played this again last night. The matchmaking feature is a bit buggy, supposedly matching me up with 3 other players, however, I was in a round with all bots. Probably a bug. But, weirdly enough, my controller fully worked. Maybe it has to write some type of config after exiting? Anyhow, the gameplay was great. There were some times during the match that I was driven to complete a bomb goal. There are some features that I do not like, and perhaps they are hidden away or plan to be implemented in the full release, such as the ability to equip your car with purchasable weapons.

I'd also like to see a feature where one can change the camera angle. For an overhead 3/4 shot, it's kinda weird, and doesn't really give you a lot of time to react to OTR obstacles.

I would be interested in picking up this title, if the price is right. Sadly, even with the features exhibited in the playable beta, I don't feel that this is really a $20 title. I'll ad it to my wishlist, and perhaps get my brother to join up, as he loves games like this.

I'd be willing to give it a shot as well if you still got a key.

The concept looks interesting on their site.

Thanks for the review Tuna. Flowey, sooperhampster and FireHazard772 have been sent keys. Thanks guys.

2 more left.

OK this is my Review
Good
Really addictive
New idea
Tutorial is really great for starting new players

Bad
I need to know how to work a character if i want to use him so a tutorial for each character would be nice.
Defiantly a controller game the controls all fit a controller better then a mouse and keyboard

Bugs
Wont let me do player against players
Wont let me invite my friends to play

Great game ill try and tweak this at a later date when i have more experience with this game.

Misterboy and 2sl0w were sent the final 2 keys. Thanks everyone. I look forward to your reviews and will send them on to the developer.

Overall I think the game has a nice good concept but sadly misses the bar in terms of becoming a major contender. Being a top down mixture of what appears to be an altered combination of rocket league and death race, Heavy Metal Machines brings an interesting new concept to gaming.
There's a good variety of characters each with their own different weapons and abilities so there's a little something for everyone which can be exciting for long term players, but for newbies and beginners this extensive list of roles can be confusing in terms of figuring out counters and play styles. Oddly enough, having such a large amount of characters and abilities, not once in the tutorial do they mention the different characters and in so you are provided with only one character who's abilities are only touched on briefly at best.
There only appears to be one game mode and one map which is essentially driving down a single guided path to deliver a ball to the objective. While this may seem new and innovative at first, it gets extremely repetitive quickly and therefore causes the game to lack replay ability. Aside from choosing a new character the only difference you can make in your game is switching from one difficulty bots, which show little to no competition, to other players but from the intense lack of replay ability will most likely consist of other new players with a skill level similar to that of the bots.
In addition to the gameplay mechanics, the game itself still has an amount of bugs, the most noticeable to myself being that the game options are shown in Spanish, despite there being a language selection which was firmly put towards English.

Overall with the lack of replay ability and a seeming unwillingness to care about if the player advances in skill at the game, I can't see this game going for more than $5 and showing any success.

3/10

Thanks for the reviews gang. Keep them coming either as a reply here or in a PM. Thanks.
