Hello eGO,

I have been a member for many years now. With that said, what are the chances of us getting STRAND map back on one of our servers?
I for one get tired of the same old map. And I do not mean a rotating server. Perm STRAND map. Or at least for a month. (( Rotating a map on a monthly basis seems like a good idea.)) We always had players on it before. Kalt... not so much. Donner and Avalanche get old.

So what about it eGO leaders?

Good Idea!!!!!!, I was talking to 3 or 4 old strand players on my list last night they'd be willing to come back if there was a strand server to play on. My real life husband only plays on strand maps as he can find them, so he would be a regular fixture on this map as well.

Hey Morbid... just a few threads and posts from over the years for reference.

It comes up like once a year since it was taken down as a topic of discussion. We even tried to just host the map one night for fun and no one joined, or if they did, they didn't have fun. As much as there is a group of people who enjoy it.. I don't see it ever making a comeback currently in a time where we are being threatened with cutting servers as is due to activity and eGO's finances.

Well being there are two dead servers doing absolutely nothing what could it actually hurt to try morbids plan? Honestly I think trying one night isn't a tell tale sign everyone hates that map? Also did you notify everyone that is not an EGO member of this night of hosting the map because I haven't seen anything advertised for it since I've been back.

I'd be more than happy to see some of my dedicated supporter dollars used to host this map for a month to see how things go with it.

You may find that alot of your non EGO members would play on it therefore boosting server awareness and server participation from outside of EGO. Which therefore exposed EGO to a broader audience.

I know of at least 4 people on my friends list that would jump on strand in a heart beat if it were around could be a few more if I asked around.

Hey,

I started that thread because for a few days now I have been trying to get onto Donnor map. And just so happen that day someone asked me about getting STRAND back. I have been a member of this clan for many years. And when the server location changed ... shortly after management changed, eGO started going downhill. I would NEVER take the MG out of Strand just because some unskilled players do not understand the concept of war or battle. I am NOT politically correct, nor do I wish to be. I don't sugar coat it for anyone. I say it how it is.

People asked me about Strand and I posted a request to get it for them. I am only relaying what people want. If eGO doesn't want to change it, hey, that's on them. All I can say is, I tried.

The concept of trying to gain members from an unsupported 12 year old game and trying things that have been tried when the game was actually popular is literally just beating the most dead horse in existence ever.

The game is well past it's prime and dying every day on all servers, not just ours. It's a short matter of time now.

When the allied forces invaded Normandy, did they ask the Germans to stop using the MG-42 because you are killing all my troops...

I only say that because I kind of felt like it was kind of an excuse of a reply on why we don't have Strand map. Just sayin'

As someone who has been around amongst the leadership change (was here with the old and new leadership) Our leadership change is not the downhill slide of our community. The fact this game has been on the decline for quite some time, mainly because of the games age. Twelve years of public servers is an accomplishment for itself for any game, honestly it's a miracle in itself, we even have the server base we do.

Our two other servers seldom get filled as it is, and those are two maps that are extremely balanced, Strand however is far from that. It is a axis sided map, and to top it off players enjoy sitting in the bunker with Snipers, and moving MG's mowing down people as they spawn, and to top it off most players go to the Axis side making it un balanced and extremely frustrating to play. The last time we had a 24/7 server, and we began to have trouble because the same "regular" players that used to play stopped coming around. We tried a mod to limit the number of MG's on the axis, and we still couldn't draw the numbers in. The regular players who still did fill the server, continued playing their same style with the MG and Snipers, and didn't want to sacrifice their score to help fill the server and balance the team. After some time, we finally decided to to shut the server down, after no one would come to help fill it, and when we did have people help to seed, they didn't stick around long before leaving frustrated.

As easy as everyone thinks it is to just come back and say "Hey give it another shot, what can it hurt?" As someone who spends a lot of time watching our server numbers, and talking with our regular members who are here week in and week out helping support our server, there is no way to justify a 24/7 strand server. As it stands at this point, we are looking at consolidating our Kalt and Donner server to a rotation Donner/Kalt server. In the end it comes down to the population of our current players, and based on the active players in a 12 year old game, three servers is not a feasible option. We may possibly consider a map vote system on the rotation, and maybe we could include Strand into the rotation as well, but a 24/7 Strand Server will not be happening.

The map will not get any players. I ran all sorts of maps 5 years ago (Colmar, Anzio, Rotation). We had a good player base. And despite that, the server never took off. Not once. I have never seen any new server become successful, in the last 5 years, no matter what community it was.

It is the problem of players-in vs players-out. The rate at which players enter the server is less than the rate at which players leave a server. Since this game is so old, as people mentioned, the player-in rate is substantially lower than the player-out rate. Therefore, it is a certainty that the server will hit 0 population when one waits long enough. At zero population players stop to enter the server.

Furthermore, there is currently a Strand and Omaha server. People who want to play strand/Omaha can go there instead since they have a server to play on. Why would they go to a new server?

The way the game is currently is that whatever regular players visit DOD, they go to their favorite servers, whether it is MRB, or eGO, or Devil Dogs, or Blitz, ect, and stick with that community.

Our Strand server was declining when I joined eGO in 2012. We fought, long and hard, day in and day out, to fill that server. The truth, as someone mentioned, is that the regular players in that server just stopped playing the game. Even members who played it often just ceased to do so.

We put it on the rotation server, and when it would load up, whatever population we had immediately left.

We had it as an event, back when we did those. We would put it on the event server and leave off the password. Some would come, after an hour, we were lucky to have a 5v5 situation.

Everything that could have been tried, was tried. I was sad to see it go, as I enjoy that map, but such is life.

RIP Strand!

Ok we get the game is old what I don't get is why you have such a negative attitude about the game then why are you still playing it if you think it's beyond redemption. Basically you are a bit of a hypocrite about the game if you are playing it but yet it's dead why do you do it. It's like you want the DOD servers to die and you are trying to help them along with the negativity. Basically like you told me one day if I didn't like things go play on another server. Constructive Criticism is good but constant negativity isn't doing anyone any good.

It's called accepting the progress of time. I enjoy playing with my friends. The game is going to die, yes, it already is and has been for years. No other community is progressing, no one else is improving or anything changing. Seriously, no ones forcing you to play our servers if you don't like the current state of lack of progress. You're expecting a hell of a lot from this group and awfully demanding every time you post.

Good games don't die, they become legends!
I think Day of Defeat has safely reached legendary status, there will always be a group playing it,
whether its a small group, or a big group.

I've had just as much fun playing with smaller groups, as i have with larger groups... and then it
often times, leads to more and more players.

Just because we don't have a full server 24/7 doesn't mean people don't enjoy playing it, or won't
still come around.

Keep in mind, people still have to buy Day of Defeat, and we still have a ton of people floating in
and out, so just think of what more might we have, if it were Free to Play. Something to think about.
DOD has the age of abandonware, and yet still makes money... there is something to be said for that.

and yes... we ARE forcing you to play on our servers. and you WILL play! lol

I don't think its wrong to suggest new ideas.
and I still sincerely believe we need to make several server changes.

mind you... I am not a big fan of strand. lol i will play it... if friends are there, but i won't like it!
i think the trouble with strand is.... unlike other standard maps... where, "all roads lead to rome",
if you take a wrong turn on strand.... you could end up on the wrong side of the map, and then
tirelessly make your way back.... only to fall down the elevator shaft and get crushed by the elevator. lol
(hey.... it happens!)

as an assault player.... strand is a death trap... it is really geared toward snipers more than anything,
and if you look at what classes the people who love strand... i think you'll more often than not, find them
to be rifle/sniper classes.

I think what is more frustrating as a german player, is that you can not enter the beach... granted, its their
spawn area... but its not a great limitation.

mortars are a cool concept, and does add a little bit extra depth to the feel of the map...

granted... if this was a real life scenario.... you would likely be dealing with these similar disadvantages of
wide open spaces, and being advantageous to snipers.

think it really just teaches you a different way of battling, that not everyone adapts to so readily...

Lets just hope they will make new version of DoD:s then we might get strand back :P

As always Warren makes some points that I agree with (yes, I will admit it).

Warren, "Good games don't die, they become legends!" ~ Brilliantly stated!

Warren, "Just because we don't have a full server 24/7 doesn't mean people don't enjoy playing it, or won't
still come around."
~ This game is STILL fun and eGo has consistently had a top rated server (Avalanche). Players are competing and having fun.

I don't know how the other eGo games / servers perform but nearly every night that I join the Avalanche server is populated. That stupid server reset around 9:00 P.M (PDT) does sometimes cause people to leave though. I believe eGo got their organizational start from DODs!?!? Show it some love considering your organizational roots!

Warren, "I don't think its wrong to suggest new ideas. and I still sincerely believe we need to make several server changes." ~ Yes!!!!! As an organization you should appreciate community suggestions. It seems to me that nearly all suggestions are met with negative responses, receive lukewarm responses or simply ignored. You don't have to accept any suggestions but.....:cursing:

Okay, so I don't get accused of going off topic...I somewhat remember Strand. I believe it was a really large map and required several players to make sense. It seems to me the only successful maps right now are smaller, fast paced ones...or custom maps. However, it doesn't hurt to try....the other 2 eGo DODs servers just sit vacant most of the time. As I've suggested use one of the vacant servers and just try another map....if it is a bust...try another map. Maybe with some experimenting you will find the secret sauce to keep the game / DODs community going strong. Good thread.

Since I've been out of the country on a vacation I'll address this point now.

Well I became a dedicated supporter because I feel the need to support a game that I enjoy playing, if you don't like the fact that I happily state my opinion based on the forum topic of a strand server I'm sorry you feel that way but it won't stop me from paying and playing where I am at the moment. No one forces you to have a negative attitude about the future of DOD you simply choose to have a bad attitude about it. I however will have a positive attitude like Warren has stated.

Bebe, I rarely say anything specifically to one person. I usually try to add something useful. I'm not sure if this will be or not, but here goes. Back when I was a dedicated supporter, I had aspirations of dedicating the money that we pitch in to help our servers, to help maintain them, even add another, back when it may have been an option to do so. The way it was described to me is that all donations go into a huge pot, and they are doled out wherever the directors need to, that each person actually has zero input how they think their money should be spent. As disappointed as I was, after time it sort of made sense. I wish it were as simple as both of us wanted it to be, but that is just not the case. Needless to say, because none of my dollars were going to help the division that I love, I stopped the support. The best support I can give now is to fill the servers. I applaud your enthusiasm, but try not to be angry when others don't share it. Doesn't mean that you can't express it as often as you want to. Sorry this wasn't more uplifting,
