Hitchiker's Guide to a Sniper

It's really not that hard to get a fully charged shot into a heavy brainpan and watch it go squish. I can't count the amount of times that I even di that today. Firethem, I loved it. Wonderful guide although I think you might have missed one thing though. In my experience, which may not be as great as many, I think in able to accurately learn how to shoot as a sniper, one must duel with the best of the best of snipers.

well, normally, if you duel with the best of the best (let's take a pure random example... Firethem! ^_^) you will be dead before you are able to get what's happening to you. I'd suggest to practice with bad players who are gonna be easily sniped, then move on to bigger fishes.

For thatguy video, I do that with my eyes closed ^_^

As you can see, I have a very different approach to sniping. The way I snipe is a very offensive and aggressive way of sniping. You need to have very good reflexes and spend time memorizing movement speeds. I do not play a tradition support style that firethem has described. My way will NOT get you those high-scoring results and large k:d ratios. Those do not matter in any class in my opinion. The only thing that matters is that your team wins. If you sit in the back to where you have a very low chance of dying and you get 1 kill every two minutes, but never die, you aren't being as useful as you can be. The sniper rifle is the most deadly weapon if use correctly. Any class will die in one shot. SO why not use that to help your team advance or camp C in gravelpit as blue :D (btw I got two headshots on that heavy. I know which one you are talking about.)

My style of sniping involves very few incidents of high-charged shots. Most of my kills involve multiple headshots on a target with very little charge. I am not a defensive sniper. Defensive snipers do need to use the full charge, as it is more effective for that play style. When using my style, you do not have time for charged shots. You need to remain fully mobile at all times and rely on quick shots and your SMG. It also involves being able to effectively noscope to do damage. Any time you scope, you are in your most vulnerable state, and you become about as easy of a target as an HW guy with 125hp left. Nice and slow. So make sure to time your scopes right. I prefer to be in the open, as that provides the most room for movement and allows you to easily dodge demoman and soldiers, while keeping multiple opponents in view. Remember to take out medics first, so that everyone else is easier to kill.

The way I kill snipers is by pure reflex aiming skill, rather that strafing around the corner with your dot at head level on 2fort and see who reacts first. Why only test one reflex when you can test two? If they are waiting for you to turn the corner, why make it easy for them? Jump out or run out to throw them off with your change of velocity, and then pull up for a quick headshot. I find my aim to be better when I first scope rather than when I sit around and wait for someone forever :)

Offensive sniping is very different. If you are a person who cares a lot about your score, my style is not for you. It is very fast pace and involved, so it is not for people who like a more laid-back and relaxed play style.

Thatguy, I admire you for you are one of the only sniper I find worthy of killing/getting killed by these days. I saw your technique in your video and found it awesome. I was looking forward for you to reply to my post.

You said your technique is more offensive and I'm not totally with you on that. You sure shoot a lot more than I do (and sadly, kill more people than I do ^_^) but my technique can be used to attack too. I'm a really patient guy and I want my shots to count. I'm like those WW2 snipers in movies that wait for the good moment because they only have a handful of bullets left. I sure prefer defending, for I think the sniper is a defending character. But, all in all, I seem to find more useful to take the ennemy on the side and attack slowly some key players, than rushing in un-scoped.

I have to admit that I don't really master the art of shooting un-scoped, but it'll come someday. Personnaly, I prefer taking 5 seconds more of no shooting to be assured of a headshot, than to shoot three times to kill someone.

Also, your mouse speed is way slower than mine is. The reason I like to have it at 5 or something, is because I can turn in an instant to catch spies or other things going in my back. And my proximity shots sure are limited, but it helps a lot my longer aim. I want to be able to follow a scout going left and right.

It is sure of one thing: Both our techniques are good, for we have done our proofs. If I'm on your side in game, I know I'm on the winning side, but if not, I know I'll be able to kill/get killed by a nice opponent. I sure would like a sniper duel, but I'd probably lose, for you have experience in shooting and dodging, and I'd need a good shot at you. I'm no dodger. If I'm out in the open, it's the opponent or me (often the first, sometimes the second ^_^) But I always look forward at a small duel while our mutual teams proceed at killing each other.

And lastly, please don't say your technique don't give points, you are 44th in the ranks right now. Die often, kill more often, that's an awesome idea. ^_^

Oh heck no. The last thing i want is more snipers following your guide and turning 2Fort into a snipe-fest...yeah i hate snipers with a passion... ~:(

LOL

and guys stop talking about which "type of snipering" is best. Just try to get the most kills the fastest and it doesn't matter how exactly you do it. you your own style, whatever works best for YOU! :D
