Generally just start with stuff like basic if/then, do while, for/each, loops and go from there. Use sites to search for things you're stuck on. If you can do logic and loops, the rest will come to you if you're interested and dedicated.

If this is your first language, I would not suggest trying to do game or mod development, it instead to basic things such as logic statements, conditional loops, exception handling, file I/O, even database I/O.
After that then look at games that use Python addons, before delving too deep.
I would start along with Nick's links also with Python's own tutorials:

If you have any direct questions feel free to ask, but really just tinker around and learn your way around the language, interrupter, compiler, and error handler.

There's also tons of other free online resources and e-books, but be careful because some don't teach very well and can do more harm than good. It even has it's own very active subreddit if you care for that sort of thing. Python, imho, is a good language to start with in terms of learning programming in general. However, like Rogue Sniper said, you should start with learning the basics. You need to learn to walk before learning to run a marathon.
