Ranks and Points Bother Me!

I never, ever bother checking stats on the server. They don't serve much of a purpose (outside of WTB and the like) and from my past experiences can be easily erased by a server change.

I play to have fun, not to increase some counter on a server.

I used to care when I worked my way up to the top 10. But then I found myself playing engy and building stuff without caring if it got destroyed. When I started losing 12 points per death it just seemed like an uphill battle I didn't care to wage because then it becomes WoW and you play when you don't feel excited to jump in. Now I play any class that is needed, and I have even started playing sniper more, and I've been doing DECENT, but I'm not Fuse or ThatGuy. Once another sniper joins up, I switch to the next class that our team needs. I have fun watching other people have fun from the help I provide, and worrying about stats just didn't benefit either party. I still like having the stats though...it's a fun goal to stay in a certain range, but I've learned to not get carried away.

I like to play aggressively as a demo. An engi's building a sentry? Go for it! There are two heavies with medics coming around the corner? Soften them up with stickies. Heck, I could just stand, place 8 stickies in the corner and hit them when somebody's shows on my screen. But I'm not like that. I have a relatively OK KPD ratio... 1.4ish or so. But that's because I'm aggressive, usually without a medic to back me up.

Yeah, once in a while I get tired of playing as demo and turn to being medic, spy, or heavy. If I lose points, I don't worry. The more you lose the more pts you get for killing someone higher than you. So it's relatively easy to come back to where you were before. I have found a balance between being high-ranked and pure fun.

For Fun, I'll admit that i won't be in the top 250 anytime soon. %-6

Actually, Nighthawk, you'd probably be surprised. Last month, I'm pretty sure I was ranked close to where you are now, and I just squeezed into the top 250. I think I was 2nd or 3rd from last, LOL. Unfortunately, I didn't get to play in WTB because I was in Vegas that weekend, but it was kind of nice knowing that I had, unexpectedly, made the top 250. Besides, I've played with most of the top players in our clan and I already know I'm not the best.

Just remember, there are a lot of non-eGO players who play on our servers, and a lot of them are better than us. :)

I used to care about points but it made me get too stressed out. I reached my rank goal and took a screenshot and said ok not going to care anymore. When you reach the point to where minus building crap as an engy you lose 25 points per death and gain 2 points per kill it is not worth it to fret. I just care about working on my KD ratio now.

Points are a worthless tool to rank your ability & skill as everyone knows (anyone can build and SG & blow it up over and over at 5 points a pop, no skill required for that nor does it help your team). I held the #1 spot for about a month at 24,000 points, then changed classes to see the difference, my points dropped to 5000 points and I was placed in #1600 place. I still played well, not like an expert but pretty good and it still had a drastic difference. I only play engineer now when my team needs it. I use the points as a tool, I will use one class until my score actually climbs instead of decreasing then I move to a different class, this allows me to master all the classes.

It's interesting to note the in-game points differs from the ranking points system. I've always believed that an in-game points-per-minute (ppm) or rank-adjusted in-game ppm would be a much better system. Being penalized for dying isn't fair for some classes, and encourages you to abandon your team to save your hide versus winning. The current system encourages you to play for rank instead of playing to win.

I only play for fun, thats the only reason I have ever played. A few weeks ago I was on warpath as a pyro and a medic ubered me near beginning of round so I jumped on the middile cp and did the pyro taunt 3 times, it was hilarious and even the medic was laughing, sure we both got blown up but who cares? Im just gunna respawn. I think my stats show that even if I tried to play for stats I wouldnt succed. Sure as an engineer I do my best to help me team win, but it isn't about winning or points and when I see someone worrying about points I can tell they arent having much fun at all...

This is my attitude exactly! I play for the glorious moments, even at the expense of my k/d, rank etc.

For example, I am the type of player who will run past the group of medics and heavies waiting in a tunnel and rush to my death EVERY TIME just for the hope of getting one of those 20 kills/destructions in 15 seconds moments that make this game so awesome. Or busting up a couple of sentries and then pushing the entire team back halfway across the map to make room for our team to rush in behind me. Glorious!

That makes me a spotty player in the points, because I'll get killed by n00bs all the time, but I have MORE than my fair share of game-breaking solo rushes of destruction. Also makes me a good person to uber because I'm already used to doing what most people do on an uber even when I am not actually ubered.

I must admit though, having about 20 minutes out of ~100 hours playtime devoted to spy, I tried spy out again the other day, and watch my rating drop from ~8500 to ~6500 in 2 very short rounds (maybe 20 minutes?). And that DID hurt, as much as I think I don't care. I guess the point of this is it definitely discourages trying new things and/or busting out of the comfort zone.

I definitely don't spend time checking my stats, but when they flash on your screen EVERY time you kill someone, it makes it hard to ignore. Not as in I'm trying to increase my rank, but when I seem my points go down ~1000 in one round it is a bit irritating.

It would be a lot better if the points weren't scrolled across the screen every 2 seconds.... lol I wish that was turned off.

Every 2 seconds? Well stop killing people so quickly! Seriously though, I think you can turn this off yourself.

(This is from the hlstatsx help section.)

  • How can I opt out?

Say /hlx_hideranking while playing on a participating game server. This will toggle you between being visible on the Player Rankings and being invisible.

Note You will still be tracked and you can still view your Player Details page. Use the Search page to find yourself.

I like the stat tracking that this offers but the ranking system is broken in my opinion. As others have said, it's too easy to get points as an engineer. It's not uncommon for a top player to have more sentry guns built than sentry gun kills (not the sign of a good player in my opinion).

Similar to what Captain Mental said, I think it's more important to earn a reputation the old fashioned way. There are many people I play with that I consider the "top players" and it has nothing at all to do with their hlstatsx ranking.

Personally I think we'd be better off getting rid of the ranking system and just leaving it at stat tracking. If I ever stop procrastinating and make a proper sig, it will definitely be replacing my rank sig. On the other hand, as stated above, it's easy to "opt out" of the ranking so you no longer have to see it.

Anyone that plays when I'm on knows that I play for fun and for the team that I am on. I probably suicide more than anyone because I don't care when I'm playing pyro if I die. Matter of fact, if you are not dying playing pyro, then you are not playing the class correctly. I get dominated by everyone due to my reckless, kamakaze style but that is the fun part to me. Pushing back the entire team and maybe burning a medic up and hopefully get to fuse or thatguy to light them up is the good stuff in the game. My rank would be way higher if I didn't die as much but that is not why I play. If I see a heavy coming through the tunnel, I will burn Buga half to death knowing that I will lose the battle but I am hoping Nutz or someone will lob a pipebomb in there to finish off what I started. Heavy down...mission accomplished. It's all about teamwork to me. That's what I love about the ego members...the vast majority will lay it on the line with you. Some of the medics we have are so selfless and give it all. Woodstock, sorg, digital, of course my girl Mishy, and many others do a wonderful job at medic. Anytime one of you guys wants to switch classes and have me heal you, just say the word. I am very surprised that my rank is as high as it is. I guess it shows that you can play reckless and do ok with stats too!

I have started experimenting with engie and sniper but not to build points only because I need a pyro break sometimes. I will also play demo and think that is fun as well. One day, I will take on spy but for now I am horrible at that and it only help the other team when I try. I need lessons Ack and Jehuty...you guys rock that spy class.

I can only reccomend that you try to help your team as much as possible and in the process I think you will do ok on the stats too.

I'll try that out next time I play, thanks!

Also, not everyone resorts to farming points as engineer. =p

Life demands way too much of my time away from home so I don't get on nearly as much as I want to.

I judge my success by how many people go out of their way to kill me instead of focusing on their objectives.
Confusion and chaos are the goals, and achievements of every good sniper.

I play for the team. On warpath I die alot, but I also crank out the ubers. I guess I'm a manicacle (my own word) medic. I don't care about rank or stats, as long a my team works together win or lose.

Yeah, I am definitely a disporlitanorous demo.

:?

I like playing as a medic here aswell. I don't get alot of points from killing but watching my team push foward and win the round because of all the healing and ubers, it gives plenty of pleasure. So I quess I play for fun.

I play for revenge..lol when in warpath and someone is dominating or making a differnece i try to go for them specifically. Case in point: when Jehuty is tearing it up as spy I switch to Pyro to counter or go spy as well. A couple of days ago I was playing against Firethem, he was dominating me as sniper I tried getting revenge as demo..can't remember if I did though...anyway I play for fun/revenge.

I play purely for fun. That's why my rank is horrible. As long as I know that I'm contributing to my team and being involved, I am fine.
