Apple did admit to the fact that when a newer version of iPhone is released, the older versions are made slower. This all started with a Reddit post, when someone complained about it. I really don't know what happened after that.

That's not specific to the iPhone, that is every phone. It's called depreciation. Of course if you update software to newer version designed for newer phones, it will be slower on an older phone.
 
I have a iPhone 6s and it’s a pretty solid phone, had it for almost 3 years and no issues with it yet.
