What do you do in the real world?

Snakely I hate you, lol. I'd like to work with ya on fridays... :P

Something that has impressed me in this thread is the multitude of Junior High Students who I would have never guessed were still in middle school. Kudos for maturity

I'm Mostly Harmless. Wait, no. He's council.

I am presently with a public records research and filing company, which is perfectly meaningless to the vast majority of society. If you know what the Uniform Commercial Code is, I do a lot of work with UCC filings and searching for them as well as tax liens and judgment liens, along with forming legal entities like corporations, limited liability companies, etc.

Technically, I'm a Client Specialist, but it's rather specialized.

Anyone have some advice for someone going into the computer field?
[/quote1211507743]

Yup - experience is EVERYTHING. yeah, you can learn a lot in class, but get as much hands-on experience as you can. and if at all possible, meet someone who is ridiculously good at YOUR job (or what you want your job to be) and watch how they work, how they deal with people, etc. i learned almost everything that got me into computers by working under a really great guy for about 6 months. no class in the world could have taught me what i learned during that time.

JoshNck,

Well, as someone who isn't officially trained, I would say be willing and able to learn new things quickly(be flexible). Be a good problem solver (don't give up). Never stop learning. Be able to apply knowledge from one area to a completely different area.

These are important. What you know (linux, C++, PHP, sysadmin, etc) can then be easily added on depending on what field you go into.

Ooo! I do! I do! =) I worked with a client that handled lots of UCC filings. Lots o' data in their system.

You guys all win, I'm not interesting, in fact, if you can read what I'm about to write, congrats :(

I'm a stay at home mom! If you didn't already know via the noisy child in the background when i'm on the mic. I cook, clean, wash stuff... Raising a child is the best thing ever (about 80% of the time). My son Peter is almost 3. My husband works for Vicarious Visions, which is a sub-studio for Activision. Life is good... Before I decided to stay home, I worked as a reservations agent/HR assistant for a water resort.

TF2 is a big hobby, but I love to sew, make jewelry, knit, and go hiking :D

I also make the best beer bread in the world. If you're ever Albany, I'll bake you a loaf :)

Thanks for reading, I guess! !heart

Hey Anne -

I think that's totally interesting - it's just what I do too!! !amazed Yay for stay at home moms!!

I'm a registered dietitian by training; after I got my MS, I taught at Utah State University for a couple of years until my son Ben came along. Now I stay home while my husband works in IT up at the university. Ben is now 4, and his younger brother Chris just turned 2, and they keep me hopping...

And I agree - raising a child is the best thing ever ;)

I'm sorry monkey but I may have just fallen asleep reading your post !lol Only kidding, there really is nothing less interesting than paper....

I work at the US's largest LTL transportation company (Yellow/Roadway)... I don't really have a job title anymore... I float... I do a little of everything... but if I had to pick a name for my job, I chose "desk jockey" or "office bitch"... pay is good... hours are good... so I can't complain. I also "own" my own yard company... I am *only* mowing six yards this year (I just got married), but it is my part time gig too.

oh yeah, my part time gig is tie-dyeing. i jsut did a 48 shirt order for a lacrosse tournament in utah, and i regularly sell at a locak flea market. my biggest festival of the year, pagan picnic, is june 7th and 8th...i'm hoping for a REALLY good weekend!

so if anyone likes cool tie dye-pm me! i take custom orders, and i think my prices are very reasonable!

Haha Pagan Picnic! Should be able to make a killing there with tie die =P

Anne and Gypsy- Stay at home mom may not SEEM to be a cool job, but you guys get to play TF2 during the day while your kids are being good, haha. Sounds like a winning situation.

Anne, don't ever let anyone give you crap about being a stay at home mom. If they do, we'll go "talk" to them for you >:-)

And I'm with Glorious... you get to stay home and play TF2!

in regard to the beer bread... I would like the recipe. Amateur chef, baby! There's NOTHING I won't try to make at least once! Chicken Cordon Bleu ROCKS :-)

I'm in my 6th year at college and still have no degree to show for it. I started out going for computer science, decided I didn't like it anymore after 3 years, switched to Computer Information Systems and wouldn't you know it, no course overlap. So let's start again. Hoping to graduate in a year or so, but who knows.

In the mean time, I do cable tech support for Cox Cable over the phone. It pays the bills and only sucks sometimes. So if you have Cox Cable and your cable's broke, it's possible you could wind up talking to me, but only if you ask for a supervisor :p I not really an agent, but not really a supervisor, I just pretend to be one when the customers ask for one, and that's what all my calls are for.

Gah Zortax that really stinks.. I'll probably end up having to do 5 years for one degree though so it's all good. Btw, I like your sig =P

Still a student, I'm going to school for Game & Simulation Programming. And yeah its for making games like TF2 and anything else out there. This degree is NOT what most people think, its really hard and heavy in the math, physics, and logic. Good news is I'm already 2/3 of the way done!

Very interesting jobs and posts - I work as IT mgr & Ops Supervisor for a small CLEC phone company - kinda interesting -

Currently I work nowhere. I'm back home from college and currently working on my BS(Bach in Science) in Anthropology. I have experience the surrounding regoin and I've had an intership at the Smithsonian and the Natural history Museum in Chicago. I'm going to be a shorter, less attractive version of Indiana Jones. Seriously I have 4 years untill I am considered a doctor in archeology.

Yay for Stay at Home Mom's!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm another Stay at Home Mom and do Portrait Photography VERY VERY part time. My daughter is almost 5 and I have a son that is due in July. I LOVE being a stay at home mom and wouldn't trade it for the world. I can't say I do much cleaning though. I HATE that part of the job description.

In my previous life I did reporting, data mining, and application development for help desks and network operation centers for about 8 years before I quit to raise our family.

About to finish 7th grade (ya, 7th grade), summerbreak start in like, what, 15 days? When not in school I play some guitar, visit friends and relatives and play TF2 :D
