Convoy Issue: Sniper Camping In Spawn

Hello all,

I play Convoy quite a bit. Up until recently, it was a lot of fun for everybody to play on. But a few weeks ago, somebody discovered that a sniper can stand in the spawn and shoot out at the bridge on the far end while enjoying almost invulnerability. It has resulted in a great deal of frustrated players that don't have as much fun. Standing in this place gives the sniper a number of advantages:

1) Demomen are powerless to kill them, since grenades and stickies cannot enter past the invisible forcefield. In front of the spawn.

2) Spies cannot backstab them, nor can any other class approach from behind.

3) If a pyro sets them on fire, they can simply hit the resupply closet and extinguish themselves. The same goes for any class that manages to do any damage without killing the sniper.

As a general rule, a map exploit is when one player is nearly or totally incapable of being killed while having a great advantage over killing others. I'm not calling this a map exploit, per se', but it seems that the only way that a sniper that stands in the spawn will be killed is by getting headshot by another sniper that is outside of the spawn on the other team.

I've asked a few eGO's and they haven't been sure about this particular behavior, so I thought that I would put it up for discussion.

I kill them all the time as pyro. They usually never see my coming, and if you only start attacking them while real close, the proximity of the flame will kill very fast. Some people complain, but it isn't that big of a deal to be honest. Their field of view from the spawn isn't exactly what I'd call great anyway.

I'd like to add that since the respawn time on Convoy is now instant, even though it was only 5 seconds before, killing a sniper will only remove him from this spot for about 4-6 seconds.

I happened to find one person doing that. As a sniper, he didn't see me coming. Because of where he was standing, the door to the spawn was open and I could shoot everyone inside it. Then I headshotted him and passed on other stuff to do. I think this place is, while being hard to get, not impossible to get.

yeah, it's super lame, and I'd call it an exploit, but there isn't much you can do about it. Haloracer's got a point as well, pretty much all you can see is the bridge. I make it a point never to take the bridge because I get sniped off it every time anyways.

A scatter gun a day keeps the sniper at bay.

Heres the problem with that, teh answer was right in teh first post ;):
they can simply hit the resupply close

They can see more than just the bridge... I have been hit MANY times by the spawn camper while on the lower level middle of the "boat"... and when it shows me who, they are tucked back into the spawn. I usually post to chat that is it super lame to spawn camp like that and they usually come out after being called out. Rarely do you find a GOOD sniper doing this though... they usually like to get me from the far side of the room or the intel room... NYPD Sharpshooter likes to demonstrate this to me time and time again... :D

i ignore them xD thats why you need to get a few engs into the enemy base, make exits and your in they're base without getting shot by snipers

That's never stopped me before, really. If you're fast enough it's a non-issue.

This simple fact is, at least according to my understanding, that if they can be shot and killed it is not considered an exploit. If someone can stand there and snipe the far end of the convoy, someone can stand at the far end of the convoy and snipe them. What else needs to be said here? On every tf2 map I've ever played, players can shoot outside of the spawn from inside of the spawn.

I find it rather entertaining actually to let them hit the resupply closet and when they come back to settle in for more sniping I burn them again. They end up being the one irritated because they have to keep running back to the supply closet over and over and can't get any sniping in. But that's just me.

What else needs to be said here is this...the person outside trying to snipe the player in spawn has a whole list of additional threats (namely other players) to deal with. This gives the player in spawn a decided advantage. By definition, most would say this is an exploit.

Just because you can do something, doesn't mean you should! ;)

I agree that this is cheap. Yeah, you can kill him, but I play convoy to backstab snipers! Get out of the spawn already! I think that map is weighted too heavily towards snipers anyhow. This is why I prefer ver. 2 of that map.

On the other hand, I don't think it is a ban/kickable offense. You can do pretty much the same thing in two places on the first part of dustbowl as red, and people do it all the time!

I only read a bit of these responses but get the gist. Basically what I do is take advantage of it. If your a sniper and careful not to get picked off by him you can use it to your advantage much more then he can. If you work your way to the end of the truck you can look in their resupply and pick of multiple people not just the sniper. I've done it a few times where the sniper has the door open and I pick off the demo or pyro who just repawned. Do this a couple of times and his own team will be pit against him telling him to shut the door.

Maybe they will pit against him, or maybe they'll just take the other door. And I know that the sniper can be killed, but in order to do it, you have to be a certain class. If you happen to be a demoman, for example, you're out of luck. There's nothing you can do, even if you get right next to him.

imo... i have tried that spot and you just die too much there... its one of the worst spots for me to snipe. cuz you gotta worry about other snipers+ guys commin from the halls and above killing ya.

I think that's probably the worst spot to snipe from. You have only a few limited areas to snipe, and a small window for each one. And once someone sees you there you can easily avoid those areas or dispatch him repeatedly until he relocates. I love it when (enemy) snipers camp the spawn.

I'm of two minds about this situation.

Firstly, the sniper can see any of the three ways that you can cross over between the two trucks, making it decidedly irritating to try and go on the offensive.

Secondly, it's just a challenge to overcome, much like a wall of sentries at the intel. You think on it, coordinate with a couple of teammates, and eventually you overcome it. Plus, there is a great feeling of satisfaction when you you win in spite of their camping or you just manage to kill them. And eventually they'll get tired of the monotony of not moving and switch class, or at least position, and you'll get back at them then by pwning them.

I realize i'm just fence sitting, but I just wanted to vent after the events of last night.
