Anyways, some of you guys have made some very good threads about other classes (only one that comes to mind is medic atm), spy is very hard to play and has a few downsides.

1) You always use the first weapon with your disguise
2) You are incredibly obvious to the same class you're spying as (Because your name comes from that pool of players, and if there isn't any it's a random name)
3) You are easily set on fire
4) People that touch you can see you for a second (or anyone in the vicinity of where you got touched)
5) Sappers can be destroyed quite easily, and waiting for the engineer to leave or trying to sap and backstab can be tricky

I usually disguise myself as a few things depending on the situation

A) Pyro - Works great when on offensive
B) Demo - Works well for either offensive or defensive
C) Heavy - Almost no one checks me when I disguise myself as a heavy
D) Engineer - Works great when the enemy team has about 4 of them, or if you're really lucky no one will spy check you.

I also do the following..

Run backwards if cloak isn't available (Because I almost never get checked if I act naturally)
If I'm being spy checked by a non pyro I sometimes turn and face my attacker (This usually makes the other person less suspicious of you and they may go about their business)

I just need more tips, I must become the ultimate spy >:3

Disguise as Demo or Pyro (sniper if you are going to place where there are snipers), or if there are a lot of spies Soldier or perhaps Heavy. Always have your knife equipped with your revolver on quick select.

If it is the beginning of the round (setup) disguise as a friendly demoman or pyro and check out what is through the gates. Observe enemy movement and patterns, as well as the number of each class. Retreat with 10 seconds left and do your enemy disguise. Wait for any uber pyros to go off, then sneak around and cloak out. Never take any chances, always uncloak in the least traveled spot possible. Every time you think you're going to be okay uncloaking because you don't see anyone, I guarantee someone is going to come around and kill you while you uncloak.

Disguise as one class for a few times, then go with another. Switch it up, otherwise you are too obvious.

Never run towards enemy spawn in the open uncloaked, you will undoubtedly be spychecked.

Never run around undisguised, the second or two it takes the enemy to realize you are doing something a teammate wouldn't do is a second or two advantage in shots to get off you have over them

If there are two sentry guns together avoid them, it is hopeless.

If possible, backstab then sap. If you oftentimes can't sap in time, run around the sentry, the same way it is turning as you sap, it will get you a little extra time to get the sapper on.

Stay alive. It is hard enough for a spy to get behind enemy lines. Don't do anything foolish, only backstab if you are sure you have a few seconds to get away before you are noticed.

Be constantly aware of enemy sentries, they are your greatest enemy (besides pyros)

Stay away from pyros. They are overpowered against spies and always win.

You can backstab from on top as well as behind. Use angles of attack to your advantage.

If you move your crosshair across the enemy quickly as you backstab, he will slash instead of flipping and stabbing, saving you valuable seconds.

Never go down narrow hallways unless you are sure they are clear.

If you get confronted by someone like a demo, soldier, or heavy, cloak and run for cover. You won't win.

'I never really was on your side' with the revolver is the coolest taunt ever.

Don't underestimate your revolver, use it in close quarters fights if you are facing a skilled opponent.

Never disguise as scout, spy, or medic

Don't be afraid to run into massive enemy fire (Dustbowl section 3, cap 1). Oftentimes they won't see you even if you get hit because of the massive amount of effects and very often you can get behind successfully. Just avoid stickies, rockets, and pipebombs.

Acting like the enemy class can do wonders. Sometimes you can spend a good minute or more pretending to be an enemy by simply moving and pretending to shoot. It is better than hiding in a corner, more fun to laugh about later, and is excellent for waiting for a certain event to happen (enemy respawn, people look away or move past, engineer leave sentry unattended)

Don't backstab unless you know you have the backstab, nothing sucks more (besides pyros) than missing your backstab and subsequently being pummeled by every enemy on the other team.

Constant vigilance. (sorry for the Harry Potter reference.) Spies need to pay more attention to their surroundings than any other class.

Don't call for medic to steal health, it is just stupid. It draws attention to yourself and you will most likely end up being bonesawed in the back.

Don't bump into enemies, good players notice, but don't look suspicious avoiding them. Act natural.

If someone is going to be ubered, help them out and go sap some sentries. It causes a distraction that might help that ubered person do a little more. Plus, they won't get pushed back by the sentries.

And finally, don't stand on teleporter exits when sapping them. It sucks. :'(

Time for some tips from the MASTER spy.
Well since he is not coming, ill give you my input.

Cloak till enemy spawn, move with them to the point.
Stab Stab Stab Stab Stab
Pistol>knife if you cant stab
Best disguise= demoman

Never cloak and disguise at the same time.

If there's an engy behind a sentry but between a dispenser, pull out the revolver and shoot him in the head until he's dead. Duck behind the dispenser, cloak, sap sentry and dispenser and run away. (Not so hard once you get the hang of it.)

Don't ever grab the intel unless you know 100% that you're capable of getting it out of their base. However, provide good intel to your teammates on what is going on in their base.

On 2fort, after stabbing a sniper, ALWAYS run off the battlement and into the water/onto the bridge/away.

Don't stand in one spot.

Shadowy places are your best friends.

I'm sure there's more I can add to this, however, I've been up for 17 hours already, and it's only 9:00 pm... :<

Well when you stealthed avoid running into people, obviously, lol. At the begining of a cap game, Warpath for example, start disguised as a scout. If the enemy team seems to be loaded for a certain class go with that class, and just act casual and pretend to be on the other team, but avoid walking into people, they know your a spy when you aren't cloaked if you walk into them, they can't go through you...like they can with thier teammates.... That's all I do and I seem to get by!! Good luck

disguise as a spy. no matter what people say i think spy is the best class to disguise as. For 2 reason. 1 if you still uncloaked on your teams side it makes more sense. 2 it makes more sense when you uncloak near someone and someone you dont see spots you. if they see its a spy uncloaking it still makes sense. Where as if a engy uncloakes near someone it obvious that hes an enemy spy.

as a side note, i love it when a spy comes up to me as myself. he has my name, and i say. spy is me. so then my whole team then comes over and attacks ME, the REAL ME. the the spy goes on living haha.

ummm all I learned is to make sure you put a disguise on first, and then cloak before you try to get behind a team. I haven't mastered either yet so I havent gotten to the next parts. Let me know if you can help me :).

Learn to choose targets wisely. Don't waste time on fast targets if you can get slow ones for less risk (heavies, soldiers, snipers, stationary people)

-Learn the best routes to take to get behind your enemies. A good route will save you from dying a lot.
-Know how to save your cloak for when you truly need it, also learn where to hide with your cloak. There are a lot of spots on all maps that no one EVER bothers to run, knowing these spots allows for easy kills when being chased.
-Know when you have to use your revolver... it'll save you if you learn this.
-Learn disguises... I actually use the scout disguise a lot... not for moving around, but to make me smaller so i'm harder to see when I want to wait for people to come by. Demo is good for staying in the sewers in 2fort

There's a bunch more I could go into.. if you wanna know some more just send me a pm or chat im or something.

here is a good one that really helps me
Fast Weapon Switching, if you get into a brawl w/ another evil red/blue bad guy and they notice ya, you don't want the knife, but instead the revolver(very powerful btw) if fast weapon switching is enabled then you have a better chance of winning if you shoot them first
