Switching to Linux in the future

Hey everyone, so I am looking to get away from Windows and start using Linux. I am fully aware that there is a HUGE learning curve there and I will work with it. Since the community is mainly about video games, I would like to get some feedback on which OS you use for gaming. I have done some research into different OS myself, but would love to learn which one you enjoy and why. Just a little fyi, this is part of my move to AMD and I am curious to understand the pros & cons of which OS that you use. Keep in mind that this switch will not happen immediately as right now I'm in college and therefore this takes priority. Maybe sometime when summer begins and I'll have more time on my hands is when this will happen.

Really would look into Clear Linux. While being developed for Intel architecture, AMD does well and in some cases, beats Intel's OWN processors.

Though, it's a rolling release so stuff might break from time to time. Otherwise, Mint or any LTS is also nice as well.

+1 on Linux Mint or Ubuntu I find them to be the most stable and well developed
 
Both AMD and Intel are well supported on Linux and neither should be any issue.

The GPU's are starting to catch up. It's worth noting that Nvidia GPU's on Linux work best on proprietary firmware for gaming, and not so much on their open source drivers.

I highly suggest taking a few Distro's for a spin in a virtual machine to learn a little bit before you try anything for full day to day use. I personally use Manjaro. It's forked from Arch linux and tends to get updated packages significantly faster than other distro's.

Ones I suggest taking a look at:

- Ubuntu
- Fedora
- Mint
- Manjaro

There are different desktop environments for each one that all suit different purposes.

XFCE - very lightweight. Not too flashy.
KDE Plasma - Flashy, uses more resources, but a smooth experience. Comes with a nice set of desktop applications.
GNOME - Simple, but modern. Can be a touch resource heavy at times.

Definitely try things out, break things, and do it all in a VM or spare machine before you have a hard time doing day to day stuff.
 
I started learning Arch Linux in virtualbox around 2011. I installed Arch in 2013. All of my games are on Steam and most of them work. Some are linux native and some run on Proton.

Find a distro you like and learn everything you can before you start playing games. It makes troubleshooting game problems easier.

Yes, it's called "dual booting". You can either install it on two different hard drives, or split a hard drive into partitions.

There are a lot of guides for doing this, just google "Dual booting Windows and Linux". Replace linux with distro of choice (Ubuntu, mint, debian, fedora, arch, etc).

If you plan to, always make sure to back up your current system first!
 
Just don't be me and break your windows clock with a Linux dual boot.
 
The first distro I ever used was Redhat, but that was for technical reasons. I moved onto Fedora(The free version of Redhat), and eventually Kali for penetration tools.

I also used Ubuntu as daily use and I was really pleased with it. It's pretty user friendly and has graphics for people who don't want to or can't really understand how to use the terminal on the first try.

When I started using Linux a long time ago, a lot of stuff wasn't integrated but nowadays, I heard those limitations are gone.

To this day, I still support Kali, Ubuntu, and Fedora.

Simon Simon is a pretty intelligent guy. Like he said, try out some distros. See what you like, what you don't like. I never cared for VM because I wasn't afraid to break things, so I honestly don't know how VM works aside from the technical aspects of it.

I just started breaking things long ago ;) We had a really crappy PC donated to me as a kid from a relative and I installed Fedora Core (before they called it just "Fedora") and it was my testing ground when i was 7-8 years old. Broke tons!
 
Too bad that a lot of applications can be launched only on Windows. I prefer applications which can launched on any type of OS and that's why I love apps, can be launched totally in the web. When we were looking for developers for the app we've tried to implement for our startup, we've found these great medical app developers company, which implemented every feature we wanted in our application.

What does your post even mean? It makes no sense. Please see the bold quote for text. I'm curious if you're stating that Linux is not able to run things Windows can run, which is definitely incorrect or if you're advertising for something because you sound like a spam bot.

I first started using Linux..hmm.. probably around 96.

Back in the old Slackware days.. if anybody knows/remembers that. Back then, you REALLY had to know what you were doing. It wasn't just "click install" like it is now.

In the early 2000's (2001'ish) I hosted a web server running RedHat. Not for profit, just a place where I could have my own website and apps.

And.. I work in the Nix world.

My undergrad is in Computer Science, my masters is in Software Engineering. I've worked exactly 20 years for the same company. As a Nix software developer. Deep stuff... N-Tier applications.

And yet.. I haven't had any Nix machines in my house in about 15 years.

All my computers now a days are windows. Even at work, my desktop is windows. I use to (at work) have a Linux box on my desk, that I would use to shell into the servers. But even that I decommissioned over a decade ago. Now, whether at home or work, I use my windows computers to access the various Nix servers.

Twenty years ago, .Net wasn't even around. Now? It seems like these kids coming around of college only know how to use Visual Studio, and nothing about Nix. Sad.. but, that's technology. Always changing and evolving.

Soo.. back to your question. I think I've established the fact I'm a hardcore Nix user.

But, my home boxes are all windows.
 
Due to its open-source nature and the potential for a very small OS footprint, Linux-based operating systems could find their way into a range of connected devices, from our homes and cars to our places of business. High-performance computing has a good chance of becoming a Linux-only space.
