A while ago we had a system where you were given a prompt with a message of something like "Do you want to play detective?" which you could respond with yes or no to before given the role and I thought this was a pretty neat option. A lot of people ask me how to not be picked for detective and a lot of people want to play detective so I see no harm in adding this back. What's your opinion though?

Edit: This wouldn't effect the other roles at all or remove the detective role or amount of detectives from the server.

if theirs no issue with the plugin I agree this should be brought back +7

Then wouldn't everyone opt out? That would increase the chance of getting T if I'm not mistaken. I know a lot of people hate getting Detective, but there has to be one. If there's no Detectives that would just ruin the game.

-1 no just play how the game is intended like carter says everyone would just opt out of detective and ruin the game

Not necessarily. If we choose T's out of the player group from everyone else first, then that leaves Innocents and Detectives. The Opt-out would then kick into effect here. If everyone on the Innocent side is in the Opt-Out, it'll just randomly choose 2 players. Just you because you don't want to be a Detective, doesn't mean you won't always be a Detective.

I like this idea +1
was just thinking something along these lines would be cool

I've been wanting this for so long! +1 and more!

Good question, I should of explained this better. During the 15 seconds of warmup the prompt would be asked if you want to be detective. If you respond with "no" it'd be passed to the next person and so on. It randomly would go through the list of players until warmup ends and whoever has accepted the question would get it. If no one accepts the question it could either randomly select from the pool of players or end with whoever had the prompt last. As kauntum suggested, you can also have it only pick from the pool of innocents. (and have a fallback system for if one of the preselected traitors leaves in warmup) This wont change the selection system or the way the game is played at all, it'd just give more of a choice to those who want the role and those who don't.

I like the idea of opt-out from detective, but not like that. In fact nobody would like to keep the detective because we all know that everybody wants to be a T.
Instead I suggest we do it the way kuantum described it, that would make much more sense.
I actually love playing as a Detective, and many people do, so I guess that too much people opting out of it won't be a real thing.

I actually dropped this discussion in the TTT Server Specialists area, and we have had some interesting discussion on the matter.

IDK what all I am allowed to say/release from that stuff (I don't think it is private, but better safe than sorry)
There are currently three schools of thought of the matter, and currently we are waiting to hear more opinions(from other TTT:SS's).

I hope it gets added but ofc we only influence, not approve, fingers crossed for you.

Thank you! :) After thinking about it a lot I'm pretty sure this idea is easier put in words than code. Hopefully whatever the current formula is for the selection plugin wouldn't be difficult to work with...

I like this idea. Some (crazy) people just don't want to play detective.

If I recall correctly, picking detectives happens after Traitors are picked, which means that whether or not you say no to being a detective would have no impact on whether or not you get T at all.

Considering being detective helps you in the next round lottery for being a T. I think its a good idea, you are losing something by opting out and gaining something if you opt in

Id say this makes no real sense since T's are chosen at random in the first place plus you have people just opting out of a role that helps balance the Innocent side. People will THINK that OPTING OUT of CT will benefit them in rolling more T's which would be not true. Then if you need to force people into detective if everyone opts out why have that option in the first place?

The situation where everyone opts out is a rare situation. I highly doubt there would be multiple of players opting out of being detective.

let's set something really straight; a system like this wouldn't change your likelyhood of being a T, it would change the ratio of detective to inno, and not inherently by much. What I think is being suggested is rather a lower priority, by "Opting out", this isn't saying you are never going to be detective, just that you have a lower chance by a small margin.

The thrown hypothetical that everyone would just opt out is IMHO not gonna happen, and even if it does it wouldn't change any meta, as it would play just like any other round. (Player x has a 45% chance being detective instead of being inno; whereas PlayerY has say 50%, With a margin that small, you will see less frequent D rounds, but not occasional, rare, or none).

Meat and Potatos, Detective can be fun, and I know a ton of people who like or do not mind being detective, let alone a whole map in a row (@Starraptor, Kappa, or Larry. ).

But not everyone does. It's actually more niche than you'd probably expect. The option would be nice.

Also, this doesn't have to display by default. By default everyone is opted in anyways, you can make it in like sm_settings or something I'm sure, and the feature could exist for those who want it, but out of the way for everyone else, whom will likely never see it.

Overall, I think this would hardly change the meta, and satisfy a niche to the players who are looking for it.

-1 Why change something thats not broke?

1. Detective is a powerful role, in some ways even stronger than the traitors in that they command an entire team of innos, and can tell them who to kill, they have access to health stations, DNA scanner, and to heavy armor. Detectives are the PIVOTAL role to balancing the innos vs traitors gameplay.

2. Part of the game mode is the randomness, that being said, I did sort of like the idea a little while back to decrease the odds of players with low Karma of getting detective just because its easier to mass rdm if you are a detective.

3. This gamemode is pretty much complete, other than adding new shop items, the gameplay mechanics don't need to be changed, and probably won't. The only addition I feel the gamemode can really truly benefit for balancing purposes is an addition to the innos shop and currently there aren't really any good ideas (although strafe was a nice addition).

+1 I would love this if it meant people without mics could opt out if they wanted. It is so much harder to play TTT when the detectives don't have a mic
