Recently, there was a discussion in the Community Meeting post about some concerns between Discord and Teamspeak, I share some concerns when it comes to Discord vs TS, I personally prefer TS for Desktop and Discord for Mobile. Each side has it's ups and downs.

This is a formal suggestion thread to allow for discussion to prosper which will eventually end in a formal response, due to the way that the last discussion went down, I'd ask you guys to be civil, people have opinions, They are entitled to them. The point of discussion is to discuss the topic, not the people.

Teamspeak is so much better I think. My reasoning behind this is because without needing extra steps, you can easily see who is talking, what their role in the community is and what their position is. It is so much more organized and not even just people talking, its easier to see all of whos in there. Seeing the ranks is also super helpful.

I personally liked kuantum kuantum 's suggestion the most, as I have had the same thought before. Have both happen simultaneously. The leaders would make their PTT keys in Discord and TS3 the same. This give members the opportunity to pick whichever voice platform, they'd prefer using. The only issue would be when it comes to questions, but if we just post questions in the discord chat, then they're all in one place and can be still be addressed to both groups. I love discord and use it all the time, but I prefer TS for large meetings like the community meetings.

As I was typing this, kuantum posted his suggestion again, so just consider this a +1 for that.

Personally, I'm more inclined to use Teamspeak, I can see everyone who's attending sorted by rank and it makes it easier on my brain/eyes to only see the people talking so I can focus a bit more. I understand why people want to use discord as more people have it and we can get more people who only use discord in the meetings (WoWS and Destiny 2 come to mind). If there's a way to view only people who are talking or above a certain rank on discord then I believe that the change to it instead of Teamspeak will be better for me at least. I know sheeeif brought up using the overlay, and I will be trying that this community meeting, Maruchan brought up viewing the room like with the video-sharing, but I'm pretty sure that you are unable to use that view after 100 people join the voice room, if I am wrong then please correct me.

I feel like this would only work if we had all the leaders in both platforms, and I'm not sure if everyone would be able to do that just logistics wise. If it is possible then that would be great.

I like Kuantum's idea however, I know that sometimes there are issues with PTT working on both Discord and TS3 at the same time. For instance, if I have the window focused on TS3, my Discord PTT won't work. Just food for thought, it can get very hectic when you try to VOIP on two platforms simultaneously.

That being said, I would prefer TS3 over Discord for large meetings. Mainly because you can see everyone's rank and TS3 is just better for organizing people into groups. Discord was never meant for large voice gatherings. If anyone plays MMORPGs and raids, they'll know that discord is a hectic system to use when you have 50+ people in a channel.

TL/DR: I vote TS3

Discord PTT takes precedence over TS PTT, so you would have to have Discord in focus to be able to communicate in both seamlessly.

Isn't the TS max user count 256 for the eGO Server

They probably aren't doing it on TS because of the user limit.

Could be wrong.

Do these community meetings usually bring out more than 256 people? If so, holy cow. Lol

We can be honest and say not all leaders talk. I would even say that half of the leaders prefer to not speak during the meetings. On top of that, there are some people that don't really have information to give, but chime in with comments and jokes to keep the meetings upbeat. While that's all great, the bare minimum would be only the leaders that are planning to speak and give information would need to be in both platforms. It wouldn't be the most ideal solution, but it would be better than nothing if it means being able to reach all members, regardless of preference.

No lol. We break 100 consistently, but not nearly enough to max out TS

Yeah, I didn't think so. Personally, I don't think TS is any more difficult to use than Discord. Just because people are used to a platform isn't really an excuse to not use the platform that is more optimized for the purpose of large scale voice chats (being TS3). If you can download, install and play a video game. You can install Teamspeak and figure out how it works, know what I mean?

My opinions reflect Ghost’s. TS offers much more options in organization. During our last meeting on Discord, 70% of the time I had no idea who was talking. TS fixes this by having names displayed much more clearly and by organizing by rank (highest at the top). It’s also easier to submit questions, or permission to ask one, via DMs in TS.

There was a time when we did.

I prefer Discord.

Why Discord? Simply because of its ease-of-use: A modernized interface makes things much more accessible to the average user (by that, I mean somebody who is new to both, not somebody who grew up accustomed to one or the other).

Why not just have meetings in both places simultaneously? The only thing that it'll do is further polarize and divide those that prefer one platform to another. Discord isn't specifically designed for one kind of audience, rather, it works well in any kind of meeting and it helps us in establishing one, universal platform for our community.

But doesn't TS3 have so much more to offer? Not really, I mean on Discord you can pop out your voice channel to ensure focus and the sidebar that is present otherwise exists solely to keep you informed. Perhaps it's even more advantageous in a side-by-side view whereas you have your text channel on one side and the video feed on the other!

M4A1-S M4A1-S That limit only applies to the number of people that can stream their video feed, and while to my knowledge it's only 50, it prioritizes those that are actively using their voice chat.

But that's so much extra work! So is the old, clunky interface that TS3 has to offer.

What about organization?
  1. First of all, we can organize our text chat into a text channel for questions and another for general discussion during our community meetings, like we've been doing.
  2. Also, DMs exist on Discord as well, in fact, the security settings help LE in filtering out unwanted DMs.
  3. Finally, the lack of rank organization sends a real eGO message; that is, at the end of the day we are all eGO members by heart, and as long as we preserve our community, nothing can really divide us :)

As much as I like this thought, at the same time, we're not anarchists. We have a hierarchy and the people that are in those leadership roles are the ones actually talking during this meeting. I personally like to focus on them.

Regarding the screenshot, I have used it in a group of people before when talking to my friends (around 12-14 of us), but I think it looks way worse than just a small TS3 window that shows me exactly who's talking and what their rank is. This will be an instance where I have to wait for the meeting to actually see how it looks in practice, but TS is just easy. I'd also like more on how TS3 has a clunky interface. Age has nothing to do in this conversation in my opinion because age doesn't matter if it still works well. "It's old" should not be a reason to not use something unless it being old means it literally doesn't work anymore.

I still can't believe we are still arguing over which is better when this argument is fruitless and just doesn't make sense.

Everyone is going to have preferences about which is better and which isn't.

Yes, Discord sucks at large voice channels but is the easiest method so far to get people into a channel for public announcements things. TeamSpeak quality is the overall king, it handles ranks well, but it's hard to navigate and doesn't have a website interface or has a free phone app online. The simplest answer is to give the community a personal opinion.

Using both Discord and TS, you, yes you, can pick what you like. Like TS for the quality, sure, hop right in the channel. Like Discord because it's easy to navigate and you already know who's speaking? Hop right in the voice channel. This whole argument is dumb because it assumes one platform has a clear advantage over the other and should be the new norm when clearly both platforms are fundamentally different in how they operate.
