It's a goal in eGO to make sure that how we handle a given situation is fair and transparent. OfficerFriendly has written a description of the guidelines that we use to govern actions on server. Whether you're just curious or interested in resolving your own question about how to handle a situation, this will clarify most server issues for you.
Please be aware, examples of profanity are given here for the purposes of training. If you do not wish to read such language, please contact an eGO or Advisor for an explanation of rules.
We currently have hundreds of players that flow through all eGO servers on a daily basis, if not an hourly one. As admins we take on the duty of helping make their stay on a server as much fun as possible. However great this sounds on paper, in reality, it takes a lot of common sense and patience. This guide is intended to help you wade through the issues of profanity, racism and degrading remarks, questionable names, sprays, and grief that come from the players while on server.
Overall there are two questions to ask when dealing with an issue that occurs on the server; is it offensive to a large portion of society or does it disrupt the gameplay on the server? If you answer yes to either of these questions then take action. If someone comes in and says "******" then you know due to common sense that this player needs to be dealt with, and quickly. If someone says "shit" while playing, then remind them of our language rule, but let it slide. Just keep an eye on the player to make sure he/she does not disrupt the server anymore.
First we will look at profanity. Even if a word does not appear on the list of words that are not allowed in any situation on the server, there are words that maybe used to insult other players at which point you must intervene. If a person says something like “That sentry gun is a pain in the ass” or they die and say “Shit” then do not take immediate action and just keep an eye on that player. If they continue to swear then take appropriate action. If a person says “Player X you are an ass,” then take immediate action because we do not allow derogatory comments on the server. Players may not blatantly insult other players or admins while on the server.
These words are not allowed to be used on the server: ****, asshole, ******, pussy, cock, bitch, rape. What do you do when someone swears in chat? First, kindly ask them to watch their language (“Player X, please watch your language while on our servers, thank you.") at which point most players will say they are sorry and it will not be an issue. If they do it again, then say something like, “Player X we do not allow that language on our server,” and if they continue to swear then kick and if they persist, ban. Now if someone swears over the mic then be a little lenient since it may have been a heat of the moment thing so just say in voice something like, “hey man watch the language please.” If they do it again then put it in text so that it is on the log. If the player says something like, “Hey, this is an adult game what do you mean?” tell them “This is a private server and if you do not like our rules there are plenty of servers out there. While you are on ours, please respect our rules.” If they continue to be an issue than kick and if they persist, ban.
Next we have racism and degrading remarks. The eGO servers are family friendly servers and we will not tolerate racism in any form. If a player uses a racist remark, kick if you are an eG, and ban if you are an eGO. Make sure you check the contest ban forum on a regular basis in order to respond to any kicks or bans you may be responsible for. Degrading remarks are not tolerated and need to be dealt with quickly. If a player says something like. “Man you guys suck,” then quickly say something like, “Player X please show respect for your teammates." If they do it again explain to them that they will be kicked if they continue to cause problems. If they make a remark towards another player such as “Player Y you are a retard," then treat it like profanity. If a player is making remarks towards a person or group tell them that we do not allow disruptions on the server and treat like profanity.
Questionable names are the true test of a good admin. Examples of questionable names are Ron Paul 08, your baby is K.I.L.F, mydickinyourbutt, etc. Keep the two questions we told you at the beginning, is the name offensive or does it disrupt the server? If you are in a server with other admins then feel free to discuss it in admin chat and go with a majority vote unless and eGO says otherwise. If you still feel unsure then post a thread in the forum or contact a senior member via xfire/steam for help. In regards to political and religious names, we do allow famous names as long as it is not being used politically. For example, "Clinton: is fine but "Clinton 08" is not since it is a political advertisement. "Jesus saves coupons" is acceptable but "Jesus is your savior" is not. If they have something like "Clinton 08" then tell them to remove the 08 and the can continue to play. We also do not allow websites in the name. If you see ilovegoogle.com, tell them to remove the .com if they want to continue to play. We do allow certain clans to have names such as (Bombshells logo) so do not take action against these people based solely on their names. If you feel a name is not questionable enough for a kick but still feel uncomfortable, then keep an eye on the player. If they are punks then they will show their colors quickly and you will have a reason to take action.
Sprays are another area that can drive admins insane. We do not allow sprays that have hardcore nudity, profanity, racist situations, drug references or sexual situations. If you have a blatant spray that fits these critera, then warn immediately. If you have a spray that shows a pair of breasts in a bikini then let it slide and keep an eye on the player. Once you know who used the spray then try to spray over it so that the other players can not see it but do not worry if it bugs and sprays under the one in question. If there are other admins on the server then ask them to look at it in admin chat and make a decision. If the other players on server start reacting to the spray then take action regardless of the spray.
Last, we will look at some examples of general grief that occur on the servers. Griefers are treated in the same way as profanity unless they use racist remarks etc. Some examples are mic spammers, voice spammers, and general text spammers. If someone is using the mic to play music or talk nonsense, then mute them so that they stop annoying players and warn them for misusing the mic. If they continue then kick. In regards to voice spammers make sure you know who is actually spamming the voice before taking action. Spys can disguise as a player and spam voice in order to distract the team. Find the player in question and take action but do not assume Player X is doing it. Treat text spammers like profanity and kick if they refuse to stop. If griefers are doing something like setting up teleporters that transport their teammates directly to an enemy sentry then ban all parties involved. If you are an eG then grab their steam ids and contact an eGO for bans. We do not tolerate this since it causes major disruptions in the server.
Now what do you do in any situation? If you are an =e= then give the admins a few seconds to address the situation. If they do not respond or you do not think they noticed it then send them a quick note via team chat by using the @ so that it goes directly to them. If you have a mic then you can say something like watch the language but let the admins do their job and do not question them if you have a problem with their decision on the server. If you are an =eG= then look to the =eGO= for guidance if they are present and remember that they have the final word.
