So I just copped GTAV and I wanna play FiveM RP but seeing as you can run into trouble for meta gaming and stuff I just wanna see if any of you have a tips for a player new to the RP scene.

Try a mechanic. You learn a lot of voices easily.
Know your basic rights. The police are scary.
Remember to not starve. Easy to forget when you're new.
Don't hold your life savings in your hands. Deposit regularly.
Learn a route of the city and expand. Try to learn some roads by memory over time.
Play with a friend. Have a point of reference for what to do in basic situations and teaching you controls.

To piggyback off Architect:

Don't play a criminal for your first run through. Play something civilian. Mechanic/Tow Truck driver are great choices. Focus on coming up with a solid backstory for your character. You don't need to actually write one up but have it in mind and roleplay it.

If your character is an overweight asthmatic who is very shy... then don't go jumping fences and picking fights with random people (Just an example)

Prioritize making friends with everyone over making enemies when you're new.
Stay in character at all times. Don't go OOC (out of character) on voice chat. Type /ooc or /loc only when necessary. It's almost never necessary.

Don't take shit seriously. If someone is being a dick to you, chances are it's just who their character is. Let all of it roll off your shoulder and stick to roleplaying your character.

And have fun!

Think about your character and what their backstory is. Where do they come from? What is their attitude? What are their goals? How do they view the law? How do they view other characters ? What is their style of clothing (classy/suit and tie, modern urban, biker, blue collar worker, etc.)? Hobbies?

Think about realism over grand and dramatic characters at first and then build from there.

It's good to use characters in media (books/tv/movies/etc) as references to help you come up with something, but I would avoid outright copies. Sometimes the best route is to mash elements of two different characters together.

Another tip, talk to other players in character when you see them. Tell them what your character has been doing as if you were that character. Just try to adopt an idea of who your person is and what their motivations are.

I'd say neutral, but think about things that will make them unique among the other folks. Could be their clothes/appearance, could be their voice, could be a tick or catchphrase. Just something that will make them memorable and give them that uniqueness that really help to flesh out the characters we've come to know and love. I like to do little character breakdowns, for example:

Harry Potter - wears a robe (this makes sense in context, but might not make sense in Los Santos without explanation), has a scar, black messy hair, leader but also can be a bit aloof/troublemaker, parents were murdered by villain. In this case Harry's scar is probably the most unique trait, other than his backstory.

I'd take some time to think about characters you'd want to play, break down their traits, and then put a twist on them to make them yours.

For instance, continuing with the HP example, you could change him up by altering the clothes/appearance, changing the disfigurement, and back story situation. Have a homeless person, with shaggy blonde hair, has a burned face from an arsonist that burned his family home to the ground. Relatively law abiding, but could get into trouble to help himself and his friends.

I'd also, stick (to some degree) with what you know. If you have no idea what the role you're taking on implies obviously it will likely not be something you end up sticking to. Although, could use that change as character development.

i.e. my char got robbed the other day, so he's looking to find a crew who offers protection. Whether that be the PD, gang, or other I haven't decided. But having the world affect the character just adds dimension and uniqueness!

Sounds like you need to bump into my character hahaha

Feel free to DM me on discord about any questions or concerns you have while playing or before you start playing. I'm a regular on the Fivem server and have seen almost all if not all sides of the city. Welcome to the GTA servers!
