Howdy folks,

With more and more people getting involved with server activities through methods like Tech and CS Server Specialists, there's a point in where we might be involved to fix certain attributes or make a zone in a server but no one really has an idea of what zoning is. Adding new maps to the map pool might need a lot of fixing with stripper and might have to have something done to it that only a select few know how to do.

Enter in the age old solution: documentation. A set of threads for each server whether it'd be Surf, BHOP, JB, TTT, etc. that details what happens when we add a map to the server, what downfalls we have to look for, how to solve those downfalls, and how to tweak maps to our desired perfection. Not only would this be beneficial for newcomers who actively want to learn how to do stuff for our servers, it can serve as a quick reminder for others just in case they forget how to do something like remove inappropriate music or images on the map for example.

With a set of documents that explain how certain stuff is done to fix maps or update servers, it can give an insight on what we do to get servers updated and it gives people the ability to learn how to do those certain things to be more helpful during update cycles and can hopefully provide faster updates.

thanks for reading :)

This is something I intend to see developed for each supported server. Not necessarily just server specialist assisted servers. Some will be much easier than others. And some will be called Rust.

I make these for myself in order to remember. I think thorough guides would be a highly beneficial for almost all CSGO servers.

Having a quick guide like that would be very helpful when the alternative is looking up youtube videos or asking someone repeatedly

Guides would be awesome as ive been getting back into mapping, music and images are really simple for removing/changing though so im curious what all it'd contain. Either way a set of good guidelines is always nice so you can actively check for things that could be problematic.

i think that this would be an awesome idea, especially since i'm new in service speacialist team, that would help me alot more then having to ask a question to someone and then having to wait for his answer, as well , having a guid would not only make it easier for everyone but it would also improve our knowledge because when we would be searching for something into the guide, we might see something else that we would need answer on it, so not only we would get our answer to what we are looking for, but we would learn about more stuff that we needed to know!! great idea, i 100% support it and would love to see this idea to move foward!!

Speaking strictly for Kz/Surf/Bhop:

The whole point of server specialists are they're supposed to be valued for their knowledge on the game server. IMO there isn't a need for a guide on how to zone, for stripper to fix map glitches or remove images/sounds that would be done via mapping team wouldn't it? If server specialists need a guide to do something they allegedly know how to do via implying they're knowledgeable by applying then the SS managers need to overthink who they have on their team and make the needed knowledge and whatnot more in depth for future applicants.
And while we're on the topic, i believe zoning should be able to be edited by the head/lead SS.

I think you miss the point of SS and the point of this suggestion.

The idea is that yes, SS are supposed to be knowledgeable of the game server and the people on it, but the whole point is that SS's were basically glorified bug testers and map testers. This has been changed for servers like surf that have people who are very knowledgeable in the surf community/map making community as a whole and as a consequence, they have more ability to help fix and patch maps and timers.

The documentation serves as a redundancy. We used to have one man who could do everything for the CS servers and that guy was custom (love you man) and when he stepped down, we kinda had to start filling in the gaps and get updates out. This wouldn't have been as bad if we had documents on what to do for maps, how we should update, etc.

It also helps people who want to learn. You could argue that they could find readily available YouTube videos, but we might do something differently than what's announced or we don't have trust in the videos provided. One place for everything so people can learn on their own time can help set the future and make more people knowledgeable about how the servers work and how you could help.

I might be wrong, but we don't really have much of a mapping team. I could be totally wrong, but I don't think we have a lot of mappers.

Your zoning suggestion should be forwarded to SS managers too :).

currently all surf zoning and map fixing is done by the ss team, if the requirement was all-encompassing knowledge we would have far less manpower. I have played surf for over 6 years and have never touched hammer

The SS should be held at a higher standard then, to prevent more work on the ss managers by needing to teach said people.
And for the workload that custom used to do we can refer back to my suggestion i posted months ago :)

I agree, but that's out of the scope of this conversation.

I'll say in clear terms that I want a set of documents outlining the responsibilities and a general description of the tools used to accomplish them for the various servers. I don't see this as an objective specific to the counter-strike servers. I challenge the teams reading this to cooperate and create these documents for the various servers where the utility is present. I also highly encourage a standardized format, or as close as possible, between these documents.

I believe, at its core, these documents do not necessarily need to be universal training guides or 'server bibles', but they should contain more generalized troubleshooting for those who may not understand the depth of opportunities present to adjust a server on a technical level, with clear examples of commands, tools, etc. to handle specific issues on specific servers.

I wholeheartedly disagree.

I believe these documents should contain in depth knowledge about the tools involved with examples of how to use the tool. I'm not saying to reinvent the wheel with making new videos or new essays, but I would want guides that could explain in detail, how to maintain the servers. For surf, it's just explaining how to zone maps, use stripper, getting it in the map pool, etc.

The idea is that these guides, for CS at least, are able to make someone go from zero to hero in regards to server maintenance and map additions.

My goals with guides likely differs from yours in some ways, but I'm not sure if you actually disagree with the core of what I said.

I'd encourage the teams responsible for maintaining the server to dictate the respective documents' scope.

Everything that can be fixed with stripper should not be a "mapping team" issue in my opinion.

I'm not sure what you would like for Server Specialists to know, because right now I have a team of incredibly competent surfers. Some of them are excellent at zoning, some are excellent testers, some have extensive knowledge about other surf servers outside the community and give incredible insight. Myself, I primarily take care of stripper (directional issues, images, & whatever included).

Expecting a single person to be able to fulfill all those roles, and expecting to have multiple of those people is an impossible ask - and even if people like that existed, it's not even sure they would want to help out.

By making guides, we can help the excellent surfers to eventually also excel at zoning, or the excellent zoners to eventually become excellent at stripper.

Those are at least my two cents.

I think having guides for server specialists would be very beneficial in the future as we will not be here forever. For surf specifically which is the only thing that I have any knowledge in it really does take a lot to get a map ready for players to play.

This is a good idea. Would love to personally help out, let me know what happens with this.

I don't see any scenario where this would have a downside. People may need a periodic refresher on what to do and they can reference these documents. It can help new specialists get acquainted easier as well.
