O boy I could tell ya a ton about my Insight (now Comcast) problems. As a Computer and Information Tech. major I completely relate to you. I ended up finishing this past year at college with Verizon DSL 3Meg because I needed the reliability. Watch out when ordering Verizon bc they told me that 7.1Meg was available and I was paying that price even though I was only getting 3Meg and they tried to say that I was getting billed correctly... Never ending battle. I'm going back to Comcast when I get back to college. They bought Insight and I hope that they fixed all of Insights issues now.
They had routing issues where parts of campus went through the same routing as neighborhoods making the connection horrible during peak hours. Also the box outside our apartment complex doesn't work right so when the weather changes our internet drops frequently. Insight wouldn't allow their employees to order new equipment to fix their known problems which would have fixed our speed issues. As soon as Comcast took over bam! The speed got a lot better because they were allowed to buy any equipment deemed necessary to make the performance better.
-- Bottom Line --
Verizon for reliability, some speed depending on your area.
Comcast for speed, but look out may have connection problems.
