The truth is that this is a PR disaster for Viacom, but easily Googles most impressive PR win. Basically this is still fallout from when the TV network threw a hissy fit over shows showing up on the web. After Google baught out Youtube Viacom either sued Google; or Google picked up the lawsuit with its purchase.
Fast forward to a few days ago; an idiot Judge rules in favore of Viacom. The reason why the judge is an idiot is on top of awarding Viacom what it wanted, he piled on a whole bunch of crap that was not requested. Such as IP address & user names.
Already Viacom and google have agreed that no IP address or user names should change hand, but the damage is done. Viacom is now protrayed to the evil corporate entity and Google as the internet's "Knight in Shining Armor". While I'm not the big fan of Viacom, nor am I a big fan of restraining content on the web. I have to place the blame on the Judge whose ignorance my have set a very scary precedent.
Anyway thats my 2 cent; you know from some one who has broken numerous copyright laws himself.
