Trouble In Terrorist Town For Dummies: How To Play TTT

Welcome to Trouble in Terrorist Town, where Counter-Strike turns into a murder mystery and the guy following you down a hallway may either be your teammate or preparing to erase you from the round.

At the start of each round, you're randomly assigned one of three roles: Innocent, Detective, or Traitor. Innocents and Detectives work together to find the Traitors, while the Traitors know who each other are and try to kill everyone else without getting caught. The entire game is built around figuring out who is lying before they figure out you're onto them.

If you're an Innocent:

Grab a weapon, stay involved in the round, and pay attention to what people are doing. You do not know who the other Innocents are, so everybody starts as a question mark.

Your main job is to gather information. Watch who enters rooms, listen to accusations, remember who was near a fight, identify dead bodies with E, and communicate what you actually saw. Bodies are especially important because they tell you whether the person who just died was Innocent, Detective, or Traitor.

If you see somebody kill a player, don't always shoot instantly. Check the body first if the situation allows it. The killer may have just taken out a Traitor, and turning around and killing them immediately is a great way to accidentally help the enemy team.

When you do have real evidence, say it clearly. "KOS John, I watched him kill an Innocent." That gives everyone something useful to work with. "John seems weird" does not. Everyone seems weird in TTT. Half the server is silently staring at doorways like they're waiting for a deer to cross the road.

Stick near other players when you're new, but don't glue yourself to someone so closely that they think you're trying to inspect their pores. Groups make it harder for Traitors to get easy kills, and they also give you more witnesses when something goes wrong.

If a gunfight breaks out and you don't know why, don't automatically join in. Figure out what happened first. One player may be defending themselves, and becoming the third person in a fight you don't understand usually ends with somebody typing your name in admin chat.

If you're a Detective:

You're a proven Innocent with access to special equipment, which makes you useful to your team and extremely interesting to every Traitor on the map.

Your job is to investigate more actively than everyone else. Identify bodies, follow up on accusations, use tools like the DNA Scanner, and help organize information for the Innocents. If somebody claims they saw a murder, ask what happened. If a body appears in a strange place, check it. If two stories don't match, start paying attention.

The DNA Scanner is one of your strongest tools. Use it on bodies and read the result carefully. It can point you toward killers or help establish that somebody is proven, which is much better than trying to solve the round entirely through people yelling over each other.

You should also communicate clearly when you find something useful. If you have enough evidence to call a KOS, explain why. People are much more likely to follow a Detective who sounds like they know what happened than one who suddenly screams a name and disappears around a corner.

Most importantly, don't treat Detective like Warden on Jailbreak. You are there to investigate, not to turn the map into a traffic stop simulator. Use your tools, share information, and stay alive long enough to actually help your team.

If you're a Traitor:

You know who your fellow Traitors are, and everyone else sees you as an Innocent. Your job is to eliminate the Innocents and Detectives without making it obvious that you're the reason the population keeps shrinking.

Good Traitors wait for opportunities. Follow people into quieter areas, pick off isolated players, use special equipment when nobody is watching, and try to make your kills look confusing rather than obvious. If two Innocents are already accusing each other, you may not need to do anything except encourage the argument and enjoy the free labor.

Blend in with normal players. Identify bodies, ask questions, pretend to investigate, and help with believable accusations. The goal is not to look harmless by hiding in a corner; the goal is to look like you're participating normally.

Coordinate with your Traitor teammates through team chat, but don't make their lives harder. Shooting another Traitor because you forgot what the red marker means is generally considered poor teamwork.

You also have access to special equipment such as C4, tripmines, teleports, Jihads, and Traitor weapons. These can create openings, separate groups, or cause complete chaos, which is usually where Traitors perform best. Use the shop when it helps your situation.

WHAT YOU'LL HEAR PEOPLE SAY

KOS means Kill On Sight. Someone is being called out as a target. Listen to who called it and why instead of treating every KOS like a court order.

RDM means Random Death Match. This is when somebody kills or damages another player without enough justification. "I thought he was a Traitor" is not much of an explanation because everyone thinks everyone is a Traitor.

Proven means an Innocent has actually established their innocence through something the server or other players can verify.

UnID means an unidentified body. Walk up and press E to identify it. This is one of the first habits you should learn because a dead player's role can completely change what just happened.

T Room means a Traitor-only area. If you see somebody enter or leave one, you just learned something useful.

T-Baiting is when an Innocent deliberately behaves like a Traitor. Don't do this. Convincing everyone you're guilty and then acting surprised when they believe you is not advanced strategy.

HOW A NORMAL ROUND ACTUALLY PLAYS

At the beginning, most people spread out and grab weapons. Very little is known yet, so the first minute is usually about watching people and avoiding easy situations where a Traitor can kill you without witnesses.

Then bodies start appearing.

Players begin sharing information, calling out suspicious behavior, identifying who was killed, and narrowing down who might be responsible. Detectives use their equipment, Innocents compare stories, and Traitors try to make sure those stories point anywhere except toward them.

As more people die, the process gets easier because there are fewer possible Traitors left. It also gets more dangerous because there are fewer Innocents left to stop them.

Eventually, the round usually turns into a much smaller group trying to work out who among them is still lying. Sometimes this becomes a careful investigation. Sometimes somebody panics and shoots the wrong person. Both are authentic TTT experiences.

TL;DR

If you're an Innocent, gather information, identify bodies, communicate, and don't shoot people just because you're suspicious.

If you're a Detective, investigate, use your equipment, help organize the Innocents, and make your KOS calls count.

If you're a Traitor, blend in, isolate targets, coordinate with your team, and make everyone else doubt each other before they start doubting you.
