First off this is complicated for most people and if you need help pm me message me on steam or find me on the foreign legion channel in vent.

This is the URL to a site which has cvars for day of defeat which decrease some of the effects and graphics while improving performance. In other words, by sacrificing video quality you get more kills and lag less.

I believe this is the correct site I cannot view it right now because i am at work but when i get hom eI shall double check.
Basically you need to find the following folder:
C: (your hard drive where steam is installed)/Program Files/Steam/steamapps/"account usename"/day of defeat source/dod/cfg
Once there you need to create a file called autoexec.cfg - Make sure that your computer is not hiding know extention types (i.e. .doc .exe ) To do this go to control panel then folder options. Then click on the view tab. From there find "Hide Known Extention Types" and make sure its not checked.
After you have made the file autoexec.cfg you need to open it up in notepad(not word) and copy all of the lines from the website into the notepad document. Then when you are done save it and start up the game.
When you open the game up you will notice a lot of changes that, some which you might not like. If you dont like the brightness or lighting effects its pretty easy to find that file (autoexec.cfg) and simply delete the line that has anything to do with brightness.
On a side note you need to delete the line that has something like ragdoll_physics_models 0(or close to that) because if you dont it can cause glitching I have found.
On another note if you find you already have the autoexec.cfg file in your day of defeat directory then dont make a new one, just make a backup and then copy the commands from the website into the existing file. But make sure you skip a line between the new comnmands and the previous (old) commands.

Also, if you have an older computer it always helps to reduce shadow quality and keep resolution at 1024x768 or lower.
