High Pingers cause lag? Discussion

I don't believe it. I have seen a lot of people with bad connection and I don't, at least unusually.

it doesnt make you lag but it is harder to kill them thus affecting your gameplay.

its not bad connection.. the connection is as good as u guys even better at some cases.. but the distance is the reason for the ping.. also called number of hops in technical terms.

Also, if multiple people have high ping, it will create the illusion of having a very laggy game, as multiple people will be hopping place to place crazily.

I thought I would state what I know about ping since I am the king of high ping when I am in Saudi.

I usually run at about 300 milliseconds when in saudi on my old dsl connection. Nobody ever had any trouble playing when i joined, just people who were doing badly and needed a reason to comfort themselves. People will always try to blame "laggers" on their high ping. What most people dont realize is that ping does not represent the speed of the internet connection. For most people a higher ping(around 200-150) is a sign of physical distance from the server. Most people with pings from 120-200 will be playing from Europe. Most people playing on our servers with pings below 100 will be from the United States. There ARE exceptions depending on hardware and type of internet connection(i.e. dsl, fiberoptics, and modem) but the rule generally is true.

I have recently gotten fiber optics at my house in Saudi and my latency should be awesome right? well, not so much. Its still at 260 milliseconds, and this is because of two reasons. The first being that I am physically so far from the servers(which I believe are in Texas?). The second reason, and you guys listen closely to this because i doubt many of you know this, is because of the proxy/firewall that my internet connection goes through.

Now, to explain why proxy/firewall would effect ping, let me give you a definition of ping to my understanding. Ping is the amount it takes for a packet(of information) to make a round trip from my computer to the server and then back to my computer. So each time my computer recieves information back is what my ping is. The reason I cannot remove this proxy incase you are wondering is because everything in Saudi is censored and I cannot bypass websense(its too hard). Now, according to the definition of ping, its makes sense that my ping would be even higher than the 180 that people get in europe because by having a proxy server, all the data has to be processed and resent through the proxy server. This of course takes extra time redirecting the data, thus giving me a higher ping.

This is a prime example of someone who has an awesome internet connection, having a high ping. I dont lag on my computer, even though there is a slight delay due to the proxy server(i will shoot someone and they dont start taking damage until the 3rd or 4th bullet) and other people dont see me lagging.

I know I dont lag the servers because I play on them all the time.

Another thing to point out is that a lot of lag is caused by video cards. I do lag whenever I see smoke on my laptop since the update, but thats video related. It is also possible to reduce your ping by getting better hardware(sound card, video card). When I used my radeon 9800pro on my desktop about 2 years ago I got about 330 milliseconds. But after installing my 8800 GTS my ping went down considerably to about 305-300 milliseconds on average.

So, a quick rehash:

High ping can be caused my
1.Physical distance
2.Proxy/Firewall/Antivirus
3.Slow Hardware

And High Pings do not cause server problems or lag for other players. If a person with bad internet shows up on a server, the server's internet is not effected, the game play is only effected user-side.

Sorry its so long, hope it helps clear things up for some of you angry ping-hunters

ehh, so so

Was there really a point in posting?

Well looks like this question has been answered. I don't think we need 20 more people telling you that your ping has nothing to do with other players lagging.

Thanks for all answers.
