I'm still a spy through and through. Nothing beats getting behind a group of people and letting loose the backstabs and saps. All it really takes is some common sense. How often will an engineer stand near a sentry with his shotgun out? How long is too long to do nothing? Where would the enemy be going? Get back to their spawn, and walk towards the frontlines. You don't have to stab the first guy you see. Try and find a situation where you can backstab 2, 3 or even 4 people. Get rid of heavy+medic combos. Kill snipers and demomen who are spamming grenades. You are going to die... a lot. But that's okay.
Also an overlooked strategy is this...
1. Get to enemy spawn.
2. Sap teleporter entrances.
3. As the engineers are coming back to fix their entrances, go and sap the sentries.
4. They will take their sentries in priority and go and fix them.
5. Wait in corner and as the engineer is going to fix his sentry, backstab him.
6. ???
7. PROFIT!!!!
(I had to do it.)
