Future heavy cheating/farming.

Well, remember that first and foremost we want people to have fun on our servers. As admins it is our job to make sure that the servers are as much fun for as many people as possible.

Now, keeping that in mind, let me present a hypothetical situation here. Say you already have your achievements. It doesn't matter how you got them -- you just have them. Now, you join a server hoping to have fun and kick some tail. Only, when you join the server, half of the players aren't actually playing the game, but are instead trying to get achievements. How is that fun for you? How is that fun for the other 50% of the players who already have their achievements or simply don't care about their achievements?

I remember when the medic achievements came out, I'd go to a server and would be bored out of my mind because a significant chunk of people were achievement farming. So, I eventually left the server. Which is what we don't want to happen on our servers. We want people to keep coming back.

That said, it would be impossible to come up with a firm definition of what is and what isn't achievement farming. This is why it is left up to the admins judgement on a server. If a heavy wants to stand next to a dispenser and spray bullets to get the 1000 bullet achievement, I have no problem with that as long as the dispenser is in a tactically sound location. It's a tactic that is already popular in certain situations.

In the end, we just want people to have the most fun possible on our servers and achievement farming tends to ruin that fun for a large portion of people. So, come Tuesday it will be the same as before: warn/kick/ban as necessary to keep the farmers off and the players on.

most of them aren't that bad, even the shoot 1000 bullets one. How many times have we all seen a heavy just sitting at a dispenser and shooting randomly? People were doing this without the achievement to fulfill. Fortunately I think valve is using the same scheme to get the new weapons that they applied to the pyros so that you don't need every achievement. After people get the new weapons their interest falls off and they go back to being whatever class they were before

Shooting 1000 bullets doesnt take that long, like less than 2 minutes right?

actually, about 6 seconds :D

I think that this update will make people not want to play medic for a while. Think about it. The heavy will probably waste their ubers and not give much in return.

Now, just to clear something up, there is no achievement for taunt-killing someone while ubered. There is an achievement to taunt over the person's corpse immediately after you kill them when ubered, however. Also, there is an achievement to taunt kill someone. It can get confusing.

I think, honestly, that gameplay is going to be stupid for the next 2 weeks. not bad, but stupid. snipers will have a lot of fun, and in fact natasha helps them. Think about it, if the heavy is trying to mess you up from long range, he now does EVEN LESS damage to you. the shots that hit now don't really hurt as much, and you can probably headshot him before he kills you.

plus, it's absolutely right that farming will happen, and I think that we need to deal with blatant farming without a whole lot of remorse. If you want to get your achievements fast, go to an achievement server. there will be plenty. if you want to actually play, I don't want you running around wasting your ammo so you can kill people with a shotgun when you have no minigun ammo. Or better yet, half killing people so that you can get the assists, and then just leaving. or wasting ubers by attempting to taunt kill a sentry. all of those things detract from gameplay, and makes it not very fun for the rest of us.

To be medic or not to be medic, that is the question.

Maybe I'm going to be medic for some of my friends... (I don't like saying that but) I won't help other heavies. It's not because of the farming, or wasting ?bers... It's simply because of "n00b" heavies, wasting my precious TF2-time.

Personally, I think I might start playing pyro some more. With all these heavies around, there should be some easy targets. Plus, I might actually get some of my pyro achievements. ;)

Alot of medics seem annoyed by the medic heavy uber taunt achivement.

We as admins should look into this. While an achivement itself isn't usually bad, this one could cause a TON of medic griefing.

I dunno what can be done here. But if alot of medics start griefing and picking fights with noob heavies, the servers may end up not so pretty....

Perhaps the best option of all is all of us email/annoy Valve to change the uber death taunt into a 'taunt with all three taunts' like the pyro...

Or, we can simply apply the necessary corrective actions to any griefing medics as necessary. Which option do you think is more likely to happen?

Yes yes... I'm just saying the ones who need to change this achivement would be Valve.

It will be quite exciting to see heavies sitting in spawn rooms, eating sandwiches and shooting at the wall while new medics on the free weekend uber them....

This won't be the only server hit with this. I hope Valve gets the word that alot of medics wouldn't like it.

It's not like you have 1 uber per 1 round.

It's not like Heavy must repeat this 100 times to get the achievment.

You have infinte chances to uber and the Heavy needs to do it 1 time. Does it really feels so gamebreaking that a Heavy taunts while you uber him, while everybody else around will be Heavies not giving a damn?

I'm not really thinking of myself as a medic, I'm viewing the big picture, or trying too.

A free weekend is coming up. If people join up and become medics, what would it tell them if heavies do this? Hell, what will it tell current medics?

I'm not saying this will end the game, or make it not be popular anymore. But it could cause alot of disruption.

For all I know this could blow over like the 500 million medic weekend and the 500 million Pyro weekend. But I dunno. All I'm saying is, there's a possibility it couldn't.

Sorry. I just always try to be prepared for any possibility that could happen. I'd personally rather have any potential problem solved before anything bad happens, but respawn has a 85% chance of being right... We'll just take care of the griefing medics.

Don't view me the wrong way ;). Think of me as a person who analysis every little detail... I was always taught to be prepared in boy scouts, and between that and being a math wiz/computer geek back before the internet took off (1990-1991!), that should give you an idea of who I am ;)

Well, just to put in my two cents...

You can't really compare this to the Medic achievement rush, because of their function in the game already. Yes, that first weekend with 5 million medics on both teams sucked, because it's a support class. It was annoying with Pyro, but it still kept the game moving. With heavy being the 'tank' of TF2, it should be more like the second, only with less 'OMG RANDOM FIRE EVERYWHEREEEEEEEEEEE'. Oh yes, I remember that too.

As for achievement farming, it's really such an amazingly fine line. I'm not gonna say how it should or shouldn't be done (that's above my pay grade), but I will say that the admins on these servers are some of the best around. I have faith in you guys to make it work. :)

Yeah, but that's exactly the problem with preditions, and calculations, they always fail because alot of the time, things can't be predicted, and the only things that can truly be calculated are things that happened in the past, or present.

I only used the medic and pyro updates to show that anything could happen.

I always try to think about what if, what could happen. I'm not truly worried per say, I just think there could potentially be a problem.

Personally, I'm not worried about these servers, since they are all well admined, I'm more worried about noobs joining at the free weekend to play on not so well admined servers...

Even so, the griefing medics would be a result of this, and I would personally hope the problem would never be caused.

But then again, nothing can be predicted. So who knows. Just saying there's a decent percentage that it could happen.

On the same topic, you shouldn't base your whole existense ON a possibility, no matter how much it could be (Otherwise I wouldn't be alive when I had 30% chance to survive and my gall bladder was about to explode, right before they lasered it out), but still, I just wanted to tell you guys my two cents, and ask you what to do.

Just to give you an idea, at my house, for lighting I have:

Reading lights
Home automated lights to see in the dark.
Puck lights stuck everywhere in case power goes out
Outside solar lights to see up to the house in case power goes out

I have 5 ups surge protectors, all connected to tvs and pcs that will tell me storms in case there are problems...

For the main tv which is basically a HTPC, I have actually two tvs, both 1080i/p (one big, one 15"), in case I'm using the pc and someone needs to watch something fast...

I've rode out the energy crises well due to years of planning, that started as early as 2001. Everything here is energy efficient, down to monitors, lights, dishwashers, fridges, etc.

You could call me paranoid, and I'd perfectly understand why you would. But honestly, I just try to be ready for any situation that turns up.

TBQH, some things I never could plan, like the gall bladder surgery or the recent leg surgery I had that I've finally gotten over. But I try at the least.

I do want to point out that on at least one occasion that I can recall, I have taunted while ubered. I was on a roll, took out their entire rush, with the last one being a shovel kill, so I of course had to perform the soldier's shovel taunt. :)

The shovel taunt is best in game. Seriously. I'd almost have zero problems with a soldier taunt while ubered, at least my heart would tell me I'd have no problems. Then my mind reminds me of what's important and I return to normal :X

Just go farm your damn achievements on a farming server and while your at it get me some strawberry's, i love strawberry's. :P

Strawberry's would help me stop focusing so much on small details, I love strawberry's too.

Yes please noob achivers, 'bribe', err, I mean tempt me with strawberries, and you'll make me forget about this  :p

I'm just kidding with this :X

Here I thought that my first post would suffice for my involvement in this thread, but in light of recent developments I return.

I think that this update will make people not want to play medic for a while. Think about it. The heavy will probably waste their ubers and not give much in return.

This confuses me.

Heavies are already a waste of an uber. Ok, they are only useful in certain situations. Not sure how a just-got-a-kill-taunting-heavy would make anyone not want to be a medic. So, they got the achiev now what? Its not like they are going to be taunting constantly.

What is this griefing you talk about? Is it medics not wanting to uber heavies who may lack skill. But then, I rarely want to uber a heavy as it is now. What do you mean by medics griefing?

(No taunt = No kill / Taunting FTW)

some people need to learn that you can farm achievements in LOCAL servers, so yeah every update me and my bro farm them on our own server :P

That still doesn't stop the achivement from being made. I understand they were made to be fun, but when an achivement annoys other players, it just seems counter-productive to a company wanting to build a fanbase....
