Gimp is a great free program. Its a great program for beginners to graphics also! I originally started with Gimp and loved it. It was a great program to start out with.

Cinema 4D is a 3D modeling program. People often use images made in this program (C4Ds) in their graphics to make them look much nicer. This program is expensive, but a demo version can be found in the link provided. I have never used this program, tell me about your experiences.

I recommend Flash CS3. I have good skill with it and its a great program. www.blackfang.newgrounds.com links you to my page on newgrounds. i have flash games that i made on there.

EDIT:- although this is not ur fault, but i tried downloading the blender and inkscape programs, but they wont download due to the file being currupted...

Photoshop is also expensive... :p
 
This thread is particularly useful because often people ask how to make sigs themselves and what programs to use, this is definitely informative.
