Spy Sappin' my Sentry - Guide to Playing the Spy

total props on the reload trick! i wish there were a way to observe the effects of this. i've also been told that taunts will work. is this verifiable?

I do believe taunts work, but I'm pretty sure if they do the insta kill ones won't.

(I've never tried, but I'll test this out :p)

Updated to 1.1

Updated content:
Under Disguise:
While disguised you have a random disguised Health range between 50 and 100% (not seen to you). A Medic healing you (allied or not) will make your actual & disguised Health go up. Communicate with your medics if you want your disguised health to go up or not. Dispensers will NOT also increase this Disguised health! So that's a give away. Cart's don't either.

You take on a (random) name of someone on the other team in your disguise class when disguised.

Under Disguise Tips:
*Remember you have 50-100% Disguised Health while disguised, and mediguns make this go up.
*Work with your medics if you should be overhealed or not while disguised. If you're disguised as an enemy and overhealed but there's no medics, guess what? Bustedddd.
*Likewise don't get healed near a dispenser unless if they are looking away. If they notice your Health not going up, you're done for.
*Same goes for health kits.
*Disguise as someone well represented on the enemy team (like if they are mass pyros, go pyro) to lessen your chance of being caught.
*Taunts do not work while disguised.

Wow, I read the entire guide! Very useful, very useful! I don't know bunnyhopping and can't get the hang of it =/

Face-stabs count as back-stabs I think, and make sure if your bored, do the spy crab! Butterfly knife doesn't do criticals, only on backs and face, Revolver is a very accurate weapon (aim for the head for a quick kill sometime). Butterfly knife is the weakest weapon in TF2.

Already covered all that :P

Tho you're incorrect about the facestabs (it's actually the things I mentioned at bottom making it count as hitting back), the head thing (only counts for sniper rifle, aiming for the head doesn't do anything else for other weps), and it being the weakest wep (Axetingusher hitting a non-on-fire foe is weaker.)

:P

I love how in the beginning of each section you used a spy Taunt quote thing; pretty cool. Also I never knew about the hitbox thing! Nice guide, even though you're fairly new to the game (I think). :)

nice thread very interesting thnx for the time in puttin this together

Two additional things:

My thoughts on...
Unlocks:
Well since the next update is supposed to be Spy and Sniper from leaked info, my thoughts are the unlocks will help players less skilled with the Spy.

A hint in the Heavy update and in the original trailer is the Silenced Pistol:
http://www.majhost.com/gallery/Anim8or/Stuff/spy.png

This pistol will most likely do less damage but is able to be shot while cloaked and they can't detect where they were shot from. This would help players who aren't skilled at cloaking times.

The knife (their only upgradeable weapon besides pistol) will probably be a Team Fortress Classic Knife...if you backstab you take the disguise and name of who you killed instantly. This'll help players who are bad at disguising.

If the spy is good or not...
I think the Spy is the most balanced class in the game, easy to learn but hard to master, and in the hands of a skilled player you can overcome any weakness or flaw with proper tactics and strategy. Personally, the Spy doesn't need any unlocks, and I think anyone who says Spies suck or are weak just don't know how to use one. They are one of the best classes in the game hands down.

THIS! ^^^
I totally agree with that. Ofcourse you die alot as a spy, it's not like you're invincible. Sometimes you are just unlucky. That's how it works. (Pyro) Spam kills you, yes but there are times where you can just own everyone.
In my oppinion, it's a nice tactic to play spy as long as they start spy checking alot and/or get pyros. Then play another class (I prefer soldier because it's a good class for every situation and it beats pyros or medic because everyone wants/needs/loves them) you like to play until they get less pyros and start playing spy again. Works great and messes up the enemy team.

EDIT: I forgot to say that there is no such thing as bunny hopping in TF2 and crouch jumping is NOT faster than normal jumping/running!

Sorry if this was mentioned, but I am lazy and don't want to scan the pages.

Very nice, informative guide. One thing you can add is what OMFGNinja calls 'MindTricks'. Basically if someone is chasing you down a hall, you turn right, fully cloak, then go the other way, he will continue to go the way he saw you go. This can get him off your back or get you on his. This works in many situations, going up/down stairs, cloak, jump around/over your pursuer and make your getaway or kill him.

OMFGNinja's video tutorials show this, and it has saved me countless times.

yes its a rather common cloak application usage, you don't really go the way you appeared to go because that's dumb when you think about it and completely negates the whole point of being invisible if everyone knows where you already are. :P

thanks so much...i read every single bit of ur info....i like the spy but its hard to come by sometimes but now that i am KNOWLEDGED, i plan on using this class much more than the sniper!:D

*Don't be afraid to use friendly disguises, but remember you have to act as that class would on your team, and remember you aren't immune to Sentry's.

Just for this tip, you are unique among many. I've seen dozens of spy videos and tips and tricks, but you're the only one who mentions using friendly disguises.
