Clicking Harddrive

Okay as of recently I have been noticing alot of clicking coming from my hard drive. At first I thought it was the fan from the case but after taking the HDD out and setting it on the table itself. Powering on the computer I noticed the sound actually coming from the HDD. I have only had it for about month or so. It is a Seagate 500gb 7200.10 Sata II. I tends to only make the noice when it is reading from the platters. It has started to annoy the hell out of me. I know usually any sounds coming from your hard drive are never good. From what i have read about reviews of the drive it seems a bit common and most of them ended up not dying out. There is a seagate 5 year warrenty so if anything happens i will be sending it off. I have a 500 GB external so i have everything backed up I will just be out of a computer for a while. I wanted to ask for some help on choosing another HDD as my primary over the seagate when I get it back. It does not have to be 500gb I can settle for 320 -640.

Also since they will not be fixing the sending the same one back what is a good program that will completely delete everything I have on the drive. I have read about a program on Maximum PC that writes over your data several times and removes it so its harder to recover or something like that.

Thanks again I hope my drive does not die. I have not immediately bought a new drive cause I do not have much money and will only buy another if it is needed. Like if the seagate dies. Thanks again.

ok the one major question that always pertains in a situation like this is, what is your budget. i know you can say what size, but believe it or not, there are many factors that make different HDD faster slower and stuff. I know there are 2 new versions of Hard drives that just came out, and i would really look into those, if you are willing to spend the money. But first, like i said above, we will need to know a budget

Trance see I havd same model but its the 10th version that is the 11th. It tells you on the part that reads 500GB 7200.11. 7200 being the rpm speed of the drive and .11 being the revision number.

I really do not want to stick to seagate because this is my first time using it and im a bit disappointed.

Arn. well my range is somewhere in 100-150 region. I know that is normal prices for hard drives now a days. I was thinking about getting the 150GB Raptor from western digital and keeping my seagate as just storage. Like I said I will not be purchasing anything till my drive is dead or I need it.

Raptors are really a waste of money IMO. You can get better performance from putting 2 cheaper drives in RAID 0 for much less money. Western Digital is my favorite company for hard drives, just not raptors/velociraptors.

I'm kind of curious to see where you read, "even though you hear clicking, the drive will most likely not die out". I've had this happen to me once before, and guess what? It died after approx 2 days.

Back up your data NOW if you can and pick something else up/replacement under warranty.

Secure drive erasing software -> http://www.dban.org/about (Free/Open Source). This will allow you to create a bootable disk, boot from it and securely erase the drive.

I am going to be buying a 1 TB Western Digital hard drive 32 cache from what ive heard its REALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLY FASSSSSST LOL & with 1 TB i wont be running out of space in a looooong time i like western digital products best with there warrantys & products.

& BTW just some recent news from my last trend about my upcoming build im going to go with the cooler master cosmos S case becasue ive found to like it more than the 1200 k

Hard drives are funny. I guess once you have had one bad HD it just sour's you. I had a bad WD a few years ago and wouldnt buy one for YEARS. Then decided to get 2* 1tb drives (had to get 2 because I lost alot of family pictures with the crashed hd---never not be raid 0 again) and I love 'em.

Well my HDD is still going strong but I have been backing up anything new every day into my external incase it does die. I think I will be going with either a WD or samsung drive then sending out my seagate for warrenty. What sucks is that I cannot wipe the drive when it dies to prevent any information being extracted for the wrong purposes.

Clicking usually means that a drive is dying. Back up your data just in case.

If you're going to send it in, be sure to wipe it with DBAN. There's nothing better that's free, and it rivals many paid solutions.

Thanks Gooda. Well see I do not have a spare HDD and I will not be buying another till this one officially dies which isnt the smartest idea. I just havent chosen a new HDD to get because I am afraid it will fail again. Plus to go through installing everything again is not fun. But if anyone has any suggestions bring them on.

Well if you don't trust seagate you can goto Hitachi which costs about $77.95 Canadain down in the US I don't have a clue how much it would cost, theres also Western Digital but personaly I would'nt touch with a 10 inch pole.

Best bet Hitachi 500GB/16MB/7200RPM/SERIAL ATA II $77.95

Well I decided to just buy another drive, it is a seagate but 7200.11 not 7200.10 like i have. I was in the process of using DBAN to erase it but it went from 2-3 hours estimated time to finish to 24-48. I know its a 500 gig and that takes alot of time but I felt something was wrong. Well I reset the system and bios is not picking up the first drive anymore so I think it is pretty much dead. But that I am going to do is return the bad one as if it was the one I bought yesterday and get it swapped out. I dont think the people at compusa pay that much attention to serial numbers and revision numbers. I think they just go by what it says on the receipt which is seagate 500gb SATA 69.99. lol hope it works if not ill just send it to seagate I still have a warrenty with them.

The new drive makes a little bit of noise but nothing as bad as the first drive.
