Italians working at the World War I shipyard in Philadelphia, known as Hog Island where emergency shipping was produced for the war effort, introduced the sandwich, by putting various meat, cheese, and lettuce between two slices of bread. This became known as the 'Hog Island' sandwich; hence, the 'hoagie'."

Philadelphians invented it. We call it a hoagie. IT'S A HOAGIE.

The only time I use hoagie is never. Its a submarine (sub). I don't care what story I hear, until I see actual proof that its called a hoagie I shall continue to call it a sub :P

In Florida, I've never heard it called a hoagie, but i've heard it in some places in Manhattan.
