I like both, but the latest cards (4870's) support on PCI express 2.0 , so I have to go with Nvidia's 8000 Series.

Currently, I have ATI, but am having bad driver issues... a lot of people will tell you that price for performance would go to ATI... but its all kinda muddy, both companies have their nice super high end cards, and both have really nice mainstream cards as well

i am a loyal nvidia fan but thats mostly because i dont know about or have ever owned (myself) an ati card. when i built a computer for a friend however there was a nagging bug that plagues all ATI cards that causes a blue screen. another thing about the bug is that although you can fix it yourself there is no definative way to get rid of it. ati hasn't done anything to stop this bug from occuring. As far as HIGH and i do mean high end gaming goes i think that the 4870x2 is the king right now. however that is about 500 dollars i believe. also nvidia has a lot more crap cards that are really just the same cards with barely any upgrades. id do my research before buying either but after that nightmare with the ati bug im sticking with EVGA and BFG.

IMO i mostly like nvidia because there gfx are great! ati im not really into them but they got good gfx

but nvidia is better for gaming

something i didnt mention about the ATI cards is that they are better for rendering. such as graphic editing and such. the benchmarks on the 4870 beat the gtx 280 but as far as actual GAMING goes nvidia is more didicated.

Whitey: rendering is a totally different ball game, the 4870 and 280 are both horrible at real rendering, neither we designed for that kind of thing. yes 1 might be better at the other at it... but that's what the FireGL and Quadro's are for... of course those are also $2,000+

Why would you do that? video cards don't care what motherboard your using... unless you want to use SLI or Crossfire...

My Nvidia cards last me for a year at least then if they die the company always ships me a new one, until I upgrade so I'm sticking with Nvidia for now

ATI ftw. For a long time, Nvidia was the king, but lately they've been relying on their old (but good) G92 core. It's reaching it's limits, but most of their cards are still using it. ATI however, has come up with the new R700 chip (well, new as in two months ago) that's raping Nvidia for performance/$.

TRUE, Nvidia does own the "best of the best", but at nearly $600+ a card, running at max SLI capacity (3 cards with the GTX280s), would cost $1,800. An ATI quad-fire setup would cost ~$1,100, and own it.

not to start a in-clan flame war but i dont think that he will be running a best of the best system haveagooda. although if you are i completely agree 2 4870x2s would run circles aroud 3 gtx 280's. as far as mid range goes nvidia has a much wider, better priced and better supported lineup.

Well, OP just said "what is better, ATI v Nvidia", so I gave my opinion.



Mid range = 4850/70...which are cheaper/better (generally) than their Nvidia counterparts.

i prefer nvidia just because ive been using em for a long time and they never failed me
