acceptable language on server

don't forget bastard. as long as your not using it in the form "that bastard" more like "I'm having a bastard of a time."

The general rule, though there are exceptions, is if you see it on prime time TV it is fine. I think damn is fine, just don't wear it out.

That's the basic guideline I use as well. Is it something I might hear on NBC at 8pm? If not, it's likely not allowed on our server.

Of course, as Iceman points out, there are exceptions to this. To use an example from this thread, saying you are "pissed off" is ok, but telling another play to "piss off!" is not, because that crosses into player disrespect territory. Basically, there are some words that we do not allow at all, and there are some that we allow as long as they are not directed at other players in an offensive manner.

The Rules of Conduct goes over a lot of this stuff.

Because e's want to get their admin fast, and they think they'll get their admin faster when other admins see that these e's can do the admining.
I appreciate that you want to help guys, but it's not your job to admin, especially not when an admin is on the server and all you say is "language" or something like that. Just try to play and have fun.
If there are no admins on the server and you need some help, contact one. Vent, steam and the shoutbox are just a few tools.

Right, and I'll say that the e's who go out of their way to let an admin know there is a problem or the ones who track down an admin if none are available (for the bigger problems) are the ones I notice a lot more. It's not that I don't appreciate the help, but eG's and eGO's are trained to handle problems in a specific manner. e's run the risk of not only giving a warning in non-eGO fashion, but also make is so a player feels bombarded if an admin still has to step in. If there are admins around, just try to have fun on our servers and let us handle the problems.

Remember: You can contact an admin in game by opening up your team chat and using the @ symbol at the start of the line. (ex: @Player1 is mic spamming.) This sends a message to every admin on the server.

Someone mentioned being banned for use of the word "rape."

I posted on it when I was in leadership, and I believe Purple has posted on it.

Please remember that the word refers to the forcible harming and humiliating of another person in a sexual fashion. The thought of subjecting anyone to such a crime should deeply anger anyone with any sense of decency. Looking at it that way, you can see how using it as a slang term for winning around is pretty foul, and why there's a ban on the use of the word.

As well as "bastard"

actually (unless i'm mistaken) "bastard" is considered the same as "bitch" in the regards that it is only meant as an insulting offensive word directed at someone.

saying you had a "bastard of a time" does not qualify just cuz you aren't directing it at anyone.
i'm having a "this server is bitchin'" is the same (basically) but not allowed.

An advisor please clarify on "bastard"

ass? Are you sure?

From Admin 101:

The same rules apply in typed chat, except because it's more deliberate, any profanity except the really mild words like "damn, hell, ass, and bastard" If ass is used as an insult directly against someone, or made into "jackass," "asshole" or something like that, then it's not okay. Warn, then kick or ban as appropriate.

Discussions about cuss words are funny, because they fall into long lists of appropriate and inappropriate swear words and local euphamisms. Long black and white lists are made, with plenty of codicils about when some words are appropriate and when others are not, etc, etc, etc, ad nausium, ad infinitium, zzzzzzzzzzz.

It's easy:

1) If it doesn't distract from the game...
2) And it's not directed at somebody...
3) And it doesn't refer to horrible crimes, of the sexual or hate varieties...
4) It is not pornographic in nature...
5) And nobody has complained about it...

...let it go, and just save an extra crit-rocket for the offender.

Be a bit harsher on text cussing than voice cussing, as voice cussing "just happens" whereas you have to use many parts of the brain to correctly type into a textbox, proving malicious intent.

In fact, those five guidelines can be used for pretty much all admin-able offenses, from griefing to sprays to chat, etc! 'Course you get all this in admin school :D

As for e's adminning on the server, I appreciate e's who point out problems through Admin Chat (per Tattis' post above). They point out something that may have been missed by the admin while not adding to the muddle when adminning takes place :D

For e's, have four or five or twenty admins on your friend list. I bugged Tattis until I had taken admin school :D Just ask him.

what is the proper response to wtf seems everyone has different ideas. What should our response to this be?

While it does sound like someone was taking the language proofing a little far on this, I would also point out that as a member for E it probably wouldnt hurt to hold yourself to a higher standard then a non member. If we are going to crack down on random people comming thru due to language we should all be making a solid effort in being squeeky clean on our behavior and language. I would point out that I have also slipped a few curse words from time to time, so not pointing a finger, as much as making a statement that includes myself.

The answer to this is in the Admin FAQ in the Admin Q&A forum, but for general enlightenment:

Cussing in Acronyms (WTF, STFU, RTFM, FUBAR, SNAFU, etc, etc) is marginally acceptable, which means if used occasionally they should be left alone, if used often it should be considered spam and muted.

However, if another admin makes a stronger call than this, support them. Don't argue with them about the applicability. This goes for everyone from e's on up! Just point it out in Admin chat or preferably through Steam IM (Admin Chat has the nasty tendency to accidentally have been allchat when you least want something told to everyone).

In reference to Pyro, yes, eGO members should be an example of superlative excellence in in-game chat.

erm i would say yes as Frank Booth says if u wouldn't hear it on prime time tv its not acceptable and im sure that poopy buns would be fine nija

Acceptable language is covered in the Rules of Conduct and an admin refresher sticky:

This question is asked more often than anything else. TF2 has no swear filter, so the answer is not as simple as "if it passes the filter its fine". The general rule is that if you wouldn't say it in front of your grandmother or a child, then it's not appropriate on our servers. For instance, "damn", and "hell" are perfectly acceptable. Some words are acceptable in one form and not in others. "Ass", for example; there are many ways that this is fine. "smart ass", "jack ass", etc. Clearly, "asshole" is not.

Take into consideration the emotion behind a statement - things like "kiss my ass" are frequently not acceptable, even though the word "ass" isn't a problem, unless it is clearly said in good fun. We frequently say that if it passes television standards it's acceptable. It's a good point to start your thought process, but it's not always true; "Bitch" will pass many television standards, but it's clearly not acceptable on our servers to call someone a "bitch" or "son of a bitch".
Swearing: We currently allow these words: Damn, Hell, Ass, Jackass, Bastard. This words, when used alone or in reference to the player saying them (like in names), are perfectly acceptable. If the words are spammed, or directed at another player in a disrespectful tone, proceed to Warn, Kick, Ban.

porn is insta ban

This used to be the case, but now that we can remove sprays and more reliably trace them, it depends on how bad the spray is. Again, from the admin refresher:
Pornography Sprays: Sprays containing nudity are no longer an instant permanent ban. Unless the spray contains graphic sexual imagery ( intercourse, genitalia, bodily fluids), we are advocating that a warning is first issued before any other action is taken. Whether you use a standard ALL warning or a PSAY, please let the player know that the spray is not acceptable and to not spray it again. If the player continues to spray, progress to Kick, Ban. It is acceptable to progress immediately to a temporary ban (Less than a Week), if you believe it necessary. No requests should be filed if the ban is under a week.

Not all of those acronyms fall under the "marginally acceptable" category. From the Admin FAQ and Rules of Conduct (bold added and strong language removed by me):

"WTF", "FUBAR", "SNAFU", etc. These are marginally acceptable. Younger players aren't going to recognize what many of these mean. If players are using them way too often, tell them to calm down. If they don't listen, mute them. Things which insult or berate other players ("STFU") are not acceptable and should be handled like any other swearing.

This was also covered in the Admin Scenario of the Week XII.

Those are great, Morbo. But this is not the admin forums, might want to censor some of those.
