Just wanted to ask. Does being in the armed forces and having real world combat experience give you an advantage in Insurgency?

I would think so,

What do y'all think?

hmm...I would say only in a less realistic game, cause soldiers are trained not to hesitate when they have a chance to kill the enemy and at the same time trained to pick battles wisely. So in a game as semi-real as INS, training would tell you to hide/survive/retreat because unless your team is incredible and communicating everything, you are on your own and surviving is not ideal for racking up kills.

so if you played the game like you were trained you'd probably never die but maybe get 1 kill every other round. Unless you put together a real squad and mobilized with a common goal to attack. And that takes more then "everyone rush B" or "i'm going A, someone follow me." IMO.

So i just charge and spray, no point in being civil anyhow.

It also depends on the branch of service. We all fight in our nations wars but in different venues. I'm in the Coast Guard, so my training is geared around Homeland Security. I'm trained in high speed boat tactics and Law Enforcement.

Now The Big Herm on the other hand has first hand knowledge being in combat in the Iraqi theater.

I'd say that learning to call out targets and communicate in training has provided me with an edge over many of the civilian folks. Just my opinion. The battlefield tactics are non-existent between the game and real-life.

Well im a gun nut, i find some things about Insurgency easier. Can't explain the RPG though, guess everyone can be good with that aha

I'd say it'll help with infantry tactics, but that's only if you're Army, Marines, etc.

Good point, i would like Herm to tell us what he thinks!

I would have to say no, more times then not I am sitting in the top of the score board and have never served time in the service. Now i did grow up on a Sub bases that the entire place was patroled by Marines as kids we did play a lot of "Hide and Go @#$% Yourself" with them.

IRL I would put money on military personal any day in a straight up fight, but as we look at what is going on in urban combat that has always been our weekness.

Yeah, I'm there with Daedalus. I'm one of the better players on a server, often in first place and I have never served in the military. I think I'm certainly geared towards that and I'm probably going to join up. That being said I have no military experience, other than marching in a formation and I'm pretty sure that won't help me stay alive in Insurgency.

I think the more realistic nature of the guns creates a need for more accuracy and patience. Although if you realize how fast a burst of bullets can kill someone there is no need to spray them for half an hour.... Bottom line though in my opinion, is that it is still a game and one that anyone can learn to play very well with practice. This not being like real life and battle.

All you guys' opinions are well appreciated by me and other players, thanks for the responses. It pretty much looks like 50/50 on this. Again and again i bring up how realistic the game is, so it seems Sixxgun's claims that it literally takes a couple of days for a beginner to get a kill is obviously true. Took me a day or two until i discovered the RPG. :D

Well I would have to say yes and no, yes because yeah sure being in the armed forces can give the player and team an advange with the team work lessons and other training they recive like being tactical. No because people like me who have common sense and know how to work together with others and stay together (like I always try and have my team mates do but hey they dont always listion! ><) Also I dnt know about you people but all I did when I was younger was play war games outside with Grey Cyote his bro and someothers and played war games and first person shooter games all the time and totally kicked anyones ass (ahem Grey Cyote being one of many hundreds) all in all, move the mouse at an enemys head and click to shoot so easy even a cave man can do it.

Military experience only helps if EVERYONE on your team works as such. When everyone is doing there own thing, like what happens in our servers most of the time, not many tactics can be employed and used effectively. Urban combat is a tricky beast, but if everyone works as one well oiled machine, like in the military, things are always a bit easier. Calling out targets and moving to points is sort of a universal theme in this game. Clearing buildings room by room, much like in the Iraq and Afghani theaters, is something that needs to be implemented in team play in the game.

I agree, although everyone in the game is just busy doing their own thing so there isn't must teamwork left

I can't really say. I have always thought that you could not simulate a real war in a game. I may be wrong, because I have not played insurgency longer than 24 hours, but I think it could give a slight advantage depending on the branch. Good question though!

Yah maybe which ever branch of the military you came from or are currently in, may make you more familiar with certain aspects of Insurgency:cool:

I would like to believe so. I'm a reservist in the Canadian Armed Forces (fyi: 16 is the required age to join -with parental consent) and perhaps it makes me take the game a bit too seriously, regardless...I'm far more careful in situations in game then some other players would be. At least I believe so.

i would say no... like this is just a game... aka pixles and sound... this is nowhere near the hardcore heartbeat of battle. plus last time i checked you don't have 40 lives in RL.

Well this is a thread for comparing the game to one's experience in real life combat, i do agree with frazarman partially. However, the game itself is based on combat situations that come up in the world today especially in Iraq, but ya it is a game.

Well obviously its a game, you don't feel the pain, the fatigue and most importantly, you respawn. As far as playing the game goes, no doubt if you have real life experience/training, you would try to implement it, the game is rather immersive , if a bit more arcadey then other realism shooters.
