Well these last days I played quite a bit, and the things I saw a that pretty much....only criticals would take my life... so is it that the criticals are a good thing because you never know what to expect. Or would you prefer that you can't get criticals so you can really test your skill.

Of course the thing that makes you love this game is that chance is also involved... but doesn't it frustrate you that criticals kill you so easy?

What do you think about it?

When i played alot of soldier, i loved crits. Didn't mind getting crit'd once in a while. Now that i play med i despise crits. :) but it does add a wildcard to look out for.

It helps the even up the odds, now and again.

Normally an engie caught in the open without his sentry shouldn't be able to take down a heavy, but a random crit allows for that possibility. As an engie you shouldn't count on it, and more times than not, you'll pay for being in that situation - but getting that crit when your health has been shredded to next to nothing sure is sweet.

I've played a few nocrit servers before. The only word to describe the experience is consistent. Its actually quite a bit of fun and takes away the "You now have a 5-20% chance of respawning because they felt like critting." Each mode (crit, nocrit) has their own feel, I don't know which I like best yet overall. As the player count in the game drops the less I like crits though, one or two crit rockets taking out 2-3 people out of a 6-8 person team is annihilating the enemy team for no good reason. With luck being a big factor in that situation you might as well remove the players and just roll some dice to see who won.

But generally the better you are, the more random crits are your worst enemy.

I am in favor of crits. I like the feeling of killing like *snaps fingers* or getting killed like *snaps fingers again*. It's as if it came out of nowhere.

I don't mind crits at all. You get crits, you deal out crits, it evens out. And hey, if I'm bright enough to run out in front of a Soldier while I'm playing Scout and he gets a crit rocket on me, or I get a crit pipe bomb to the face from a Demo, then I say they deserve that one shot kill. :P

I don't mind crits, but there seems to be times when I'll be playing, and everytime I turn a corner, a soldier is critting me in the face. Now, this would be a big deal, but it's seems like it's consistent, and everytime I see that soldier after that, they crit against me. I often think the game just wants me dead. :<

i thinq i like crits off better i dont do them much and get killed by them ALL THE TIME, damnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnit

once you put random chance in the game, skill goes out the window
things that increase damage when you know to expect crits, like kritzkrieg, boxing gloves, headshots etc are obviously a good addition, but random chance is no good

I was surprised they added it in a pro game like tf2, and initially I thought critical hits were simply cause I was getting headshots with shottie or pistol or etc

but they seem to work in tf2, adding a bit more chaos, but eh. They don't seem to take away that much from gameplay, but don't add anything good either
have to take it with a grain of salt

I'm neutral on crits. I hate receiving them, but dishing out crits is really satisfying. So I'm a bit torn. =(

I pray for the crit. rocket. Every time I get into a fight as a soldier, I pray for that glowing wonder to help me out.

The only time a soldier ever kills me is with a crit.

I like crits when they belong to me :D

I'm usually on medic so you would think that I wouldn't like crits, however, I don't mind them at all. Not only does it throw another factor in the mix up, but it may allow someone new to the game get a kill easier. There are some days that I just loathe crits though....its those days when I'll get death after death because of them and lose ubers.

Crits are the only way for a medic to reliably kill with the ubersaw. Crits are also the great equalizer if your team is being steamrolled by a powerhouse offense. Anecdotal evidence would seem to suggest that crits favor a strong defensive player more than a strong offensive player, all other things being equal.

It depends on which side the crit is on :P. Even tho they can be quite irritating sometimes.

As a spy, crit rev kills are rare for me. I rely on accuracy, not chance. I really don't care though, so i play on an eqaul number of crit/nocrit servers.

well think of this: the newbie players would probly stop playing within the first 2 days because of the fact that TF2 has a learning curve (how to use classes, and general gameplay) the fact that crits are there lets newbie players who MIGHT get one kill (thinks of first day of TF2) actually get some kills, it makes the players not feel TOTALLY useless and keep playing. would you play the game if all you did was die and maybe get a COUPLE kills? i would'nt

well put simply im with it because it helps keep players with the game (it IS annoying when im about to own an engis sentry and i get crit wrenched D: )

and as a spy...the revolver crit is fairly high and its gotten me out of a few pinches so...yeah

and also @doomcat

but that's the thing, random chance really reduces strategy

can you imagine a lucky kill like that in quake 3? absolutely not! Can you imagine a new player taking out an experienced sc gamer. never. That;s why those games are pro, pure skill, pure strategy

granted, they are 1v1 games, but if we take 1.6, the only lucky kill I can think of is lucky headshot from spraying by a noob. Regardless, it's all about coordination, so while there is a tiny bit of luck, a new player would never take down an experienced one (though I'm not big on cs, don;t play it as much, but my friend taught me a few things though)

that's what defines a game as pro, a new player can never take out an experienced one, maybe only through beginners luck, but that doesn't relate to any mechanic within the game, especially so obvious as random insta-kill hits (basically)

perhaps my argument is elitist, but games should cater to pros and hardcore crowd, crits obviously there to cater to noobs as doomcat pointed out, so yeah. Not a big fan of random uncontrollable crits

control is also another thing, but maybe I'll talk about that when I'm less sleepy

edit: on second thought, that's not really a problem with tf2 in particular, but with modern gaming in general
