In honor of my two years here, Ill tell you some of you newer members of the humble starting time of eGO
So if your interested in hearing a story about the early days ( Can't really call them the good ol' days since these days are pretty good, if not better in some respects)
So grab a chair and find a spot near the fireside!
It all started in a game called Day of Defeat: Source. I was bored of playing over a thousand hours (!) of Counter Strike Source, especially since the clan I founded broke up after a couple of years. I just keep randomly jumping from dods server to server. I frequented many 24/7 Ava servers, but never stayed for long at one. What annoyed me was the constant swearing over the mic. I would never play with speakers because of this.
Then one day I happened upon this 24/7 =(eGO)= AVA server. I didn't bother to read the motd because I figured it was like every other server. After I played there for about an hour, I saw a couple eGO people play, they seemed pretty cool. Then I heard a guy swear. But instead of a larger flurry of cursing, I heard one of the members tell them to stop, its against the rules. I was like ???? and the guy swore again and got kicked. Until this point, I have never seen a player kicked from a server for swearing. I thought how weird and even said that over chat.
I was told that eGO prides themselves on running a mature server. Before this, mature always meant swearing was encouraged (Think Css and BF2), not the other way around. It took a couple minutes to fully sink in and then I inquired about joining. I was happy to see that everyone was accepted and there was no monthly payments. I was forum member 251 and eGO was 5 months old when I joined
Fast forward from December a month or two and I got promoted. (Yes 2 months, not 2 weeks, you eager e's you
) At this time, promos were a VERY big deal, council thought over each person and a large list was more then 5 or 6 at a time. A little bit after I got my promotion, we had thoughts about getting a *gasp* SECOND server for the clan because of the long line to get into Ava.
The discussion about this second server was pretty long. We had to make sure we would have enough admins to cover TWO servers instead of just one. Also, we worried about how high our costs would become (I don't remember for sure, but I think this 2nd server would give us 200$ a month bill?).
(Dont read this part Mrs. JohnT)
JohnT then told us his story of how he would snail mail Deacon the money to pay for the bills. After taking into account all the pros and cons, Council decided to open a 2nd server and 24/7 Donner was born. And then DoDs started to explode in numbers. Pretty soon Donner was fighting for pole position with Ava and we entered into a great expansion time for DoDs.
We had our one year anniversary with our two servers.
We formed Houses ( Yes, there was an eGO before Houses in DoDs! lol) to help manage all the members in Dods so that people would not get left out for promos or not noticed. After a brief time of well being with houses, we had the Jones incident, reducing our numbers by around 100 people or so. Normally, a loss this big would DEVASTATE a clan, but we are eGO, we can endure and we had plenty of members.
Now we approach the time of TF2. We started out with only a single server in TF2. This quickly gained popularity and a second server was brought in around Christmas time, 24/7 Dustbowl was created.
One of my favorite memories of the early days of TF2 was during a scrim we had for fun. We were playing on Gravel pit and having 1 on 1 boxing matches around the ring in A. To be funny (since it was a just for fun scrim) I went spy and back stabbed the ENTIRE Red team who was heavy. Dominion kicked me and we all had a good laugh
TF2 then exploded with members with an extreme growth spurt and we started getting more servers.
Then you get what we have today with TF2.
One thing I would also like to point out was the size of our meetings. We used to have Team Speak and we considered a meeting large if we got over 30 people. I believe the TS server had a limit of 50 that we had to increase. Then we finally got vent and on Febuarary 14th of last year, held our largest meeting to date. We had vent filled with 300, yes THREE HUNDRED members for a meeting. I think that in itself shows how much we have grown.
I know thats a lot, but if you read it, you'll find out how much we have really achieved in the world of gaming.
I would like to get my U: in and thank Council for the hard work they have done, without them, we couldn't achieve what we have today.
Also, in addition to the leadership, what makes eGO so great is its members. Without you, we are just an empty shell of servers. Its the members that bring life to the community.
My hat is off to all of you.
